Position Overview

The Psychiatric Support Specialist plays a crucial role in assisting and guiding patients throughout their treatment journey, from the moment of admission to their eventual discharge. This position focuses on ensuring patient safety, providing therapeutic interventions, leading educational support groups, and aiding patients in navigating their treatment pathways. Given that the support team is available around the clock, vigilant patient monitoring and effective communication with the treatment team are vital. The role reports directly to the Facility Manager or Program Director.

Key Responsibilities

  • Introduce new patients to the treatment program, outlining its objectives, requirements, and daily routines. Complete necessary assessments within 24 hours of patient admission.
  • Identify any special needs of new patients, relay these to the treatment team, and assist patients in addressing these needs.
  • Continuously monitor all patients throughout their treatment, ensuring they remain visible in the environment and regularly checking on them in various areas.
  • Contribute positively to the well-being of all patients by acting as a role model and demonstrating professionalism and compassion towards colleagues, patients, and visitors. Treat everyone with respect and courtesy.
  • Support the treatment plan established by the Therapist by providing daily assistance to patients and helping them engage in positive coping strategies when needed.
  • Recognize the significance of structure by adhering to house rules and the group schedule during each shift.
  • Facilitate and engage patients in therapeutic groups such as coping skills, relapse prevention, psychoeducation, and life skills, ensuring sessions last the designated time as per the Program Schedule. Assist in generating ideas for group activities.
  • As the primary observers in the treatment environment, document any notable behaviors thoroughly and appropriately, maintaining confidentiality regarding all patient and program-related matters.
  • Answer phone calls promptly and courteously, directing inquiries to the appropriate personnel when necessary.
  • Maintain a tidy environment by completing required cleaning tasks during each shift and documenting them accordingly.

This is a part-time role within our organization.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Bachelor's degree or one year of experience working with mental health or adolescents preferred.
  • Must participate in all training, educational, and staff development activities, including monthly online and in-person training sessions.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License in good standing is required.
  • Must obtain CPI and CPR/First Aid certification within 90 days of employment.
