Job Title: Occupational Health Specialist

About the Job

This position exists to ensure the safety of employees at the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED). The role administers the State of New Mexico Safety Program for NMED by overseeing systems designed to identify and mitigate potential or actual safety issues.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review work environments to identify potential health and safety hazards
  • Design programs to prevent disease or injury
  • Conduct inspections and ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA) and other health and safety laws
  • Provide direct training to all employees on safety protocols and emergency procedures
  • Assist in accident investigations and implement follow-up actions to prevent future incidents
  • Create and maintain facility mapping for emergency evacuation purposes and conduct regular reviews to ensure accuracy
  • Update procedures, manuals, and policies to improve safety outcomes, develop and implement loss control initiatives
  • Track safety violations and corrective actions
Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course certification.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, and reaching may be required. This position also requires moderate travel to field locations, meetings, trainings, and inspections.
