Job Summary

The State of New Mexico is seeking a highly skilled Occupational Health Specialist to join our team. This role is responsible for preventing harm to employees, property, the environment, and the general public by designing safe workspaces, inspecting machines, and testing air quality.

The ideal candidate will have experience in risk management, loss control, or a related field, and be proficient in Microsoft Office applications. They will also be effective in teaching assigned training curriculum, including Defensive Driving, First Aid/CPR, and other relevant safety topics.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct safety inspections of State of New Mexico facilities
  • Analyze work environments and design programs to control, eliminate, and prevent disease or injury
  • Provide training on new regulations and policies, or on how to recognize hazards
  • Conduct safety training sessions, including training on how to recognize hazards, explain new regulations, production processes, and safe work methods
  • Investigate NMDOT vehicle crashes and make recommendations to prevent recurrence

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and two (2) years of experience in a risk management or a related field
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with internal and external customers, both verbally and in writing
  • Must possess a basic knowledge of State and Federal safety regulations
  • Must be effective in teaching assigned training curriculum

Working Conditions:

The work is performed in an office setting and outdoors. The employee is exposed to outside work in varying weather conditions, including hot or cold temperatures, humidity, wind, rain, and snow. They may also be exposed to moving mechanical parts, high, precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals, and airborne particles.

The ideal candidate will be able to work irregular hours and may be required to travel with possible overnight stays away from post of duty.
