Job Overview

SUMMARY: The Senior Financial Officer will demonstrate exceptional technical expertise and a comprehensive understanding of accounting principles and standards related to financial reporting. This role requires the ability to analyze and resolve intricate accounting challenges. The Senior Financial Officer will collaborate closely with the Chief Financial Officer in managing the daily operations of the Accounting Division. This position is responsible for maintaining essential schedules and documentation for monthly closings, quarterly assessments, and the annual audit process.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting Functions

  • Execute daily and month-end closing entries, including revenue recognition, payroll processing, prepaid expenses, depreciation, unbilled accounts receivable, and accrued liabilities.
  • Reconcile sub-ledger balances with general ledger accounts.
  • Conduct monthly bank account reconciliations.
  • Oversee and reconcile fixed asset and prepaid expense schedules.
  • Manage the reconciliation of Health Savings Accounts (HSA), Dependent Care Accounts (DCA), and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).
  • Assist in the month-end and fiscal year-end closing processes in compliance with GAAP.
  • Support the CFO and external auditors during year-end by preparing schedules, providing explanations of supporting materials, and generating necessary reports.
  • Recommend and enforce internal controls, policies, and procedures.
  • Prepare monthly balance sheets, income statements, and reports on changes in financial position.
  • Generate monthly financial statements.
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and provide support as needed.
  • Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure accurate account coding for all transaction classes in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Provide support to the CFO and finance team for various health center reports, including Medicare cost reports, grant budgeting, and payroll reporting.

Grants Management (in collaboration with other Senior Accountants)

  • Provide technical assistance and general support for grants administration and financial reporting, including federal grants, state grants, and private grants. Collaborate with project teams to develop program budgets for state and private grants.
  • Oversee grants and revenue management across health center departments, ensuring reconciliation of general ledger reports with patient billing systems and donor databases.
  • Maintain and provide necessary documentation to support grant-specific audits.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in accounting or equivalent experience is required.
  • 5-7 years of experience in an accounting role is required, preferably within a non-profit organization.
  • Familiarity with grants management and reporting is preferred.
  • Strong background in using integrated financial software packages; knowledge of Blackbaud Financial Edge is a plus.
  • Understanding of FAR, CFR, as well as GAAP/FASB standards.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, with strong Excel skills required.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to handle confidential information and data responsibly.
  • Strong leadership and management capabilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, managing multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Must be able to sit or stand at a desk in a standard office setting.
  • Must be able to read fine print on paper, computer screens, and databases; ability to lift 10 lbs.
