About the Role

Austal USA is seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Designer II to join our team. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work with a dynamic company and contribute to the design and development of cutting-edge shipbuilding projects.

Estimated Salary: $65,000 - $90,000 per year

Job Description

The Mechanical Designer II will be responsible for creating 2D and 3D drawings, checking and developing designs created by junior designers, and providing input to evaluations of junior designers. This role requires excellent communication skills, a strong understanding of scheduling and deadlines, and proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2 years of 3D modeling experience, 3-6 years of shipyard design or production/construction experience, and a strong background in modular construction methods. Experience with ShipConstructor is preferred, as well as a good understanding of design in various areas such as equipment, electrical, fitout, foundations, hull, HVAC, material, pipe, product hierarchy, structure, and more.

The Mechanical Designer II will also be responsible for interpreting system schematics, structural key plans, compartment arrangements, and electrical diagrams to create 3D CAD models. Additionally, this role may involve leading the work of junior designers, determining technical adequacy of designs, and training junior designers according to established standards and procedures.

Required Skills and Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associates Degree or higher in CAD preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of 3D modeling experience
  • 3-6 years of shipyard design or production/construction experience or equivalent experience
  • Experience with modular construction methods preferred
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong understanding of scheduling and deadlines
  • Ability to interpret system schematics, structural key plans, compartment arrangements, and electrical diagrams
