Position Overview

The Department of Sustainable Biomaterials at the Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking applications for the role of Extension Specialist in Sustainable Biomaterial Marketing. This department is dedicated to cultivating future leaders in the sustainable use of forest-derived and other renewable materials. The forest products sector in Virginia plays a crucial role, contributing significantly to the economy and providing numerous employment opportunities. Our faculty, engaged in extension work, have consistently supported the forest products industry within the Commonwealth. We encourage applications from individuals who identify with groups that are traditionally underrepresented in our field, including but not limited to individuals from Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color, first-generation college students, and those from underrepresented gender identities.

We are looking for enthusiastic candidates to develop a program that emphasizes both current and emerging biomaterial products, markets, and opportunities, particularly within the state's forest products sector. Ideal candidates will possess expertise in areas such as renewable material market analysis, biomaterial trade evaluation, business development in biomaterials, adapting businesses to market dynamics, identifying industry needs, and facilitating connections between students and industry stakeholders.

The successful applicant will enhance the outreach and engagement mission of the department by delivering accessible, research-driven programs and educational resources aimed at improving the lives of individuals, families, businesses, and communities.

Key Responsibilities
The program may focus on the following areas:

  • Analyzing biobased materials and energy markets
  • Evaluating the impact of policies on market conditions
  • Assisting stakeholders in analyzing and developing potential markets
  • Identifying industry needs and advancing knowledge as product markets evolve
  • Supporting businesses in the renewable materials sector
  • Developing sustainable business strategies
  • Aiding in the creation of business plans
  • Assisting with new product development initiatives
  • Supporting the analysis and development of export markets
  • Conducting program evaluations and assessing impact

This is a tenure-track position with a 9-month appointment, where the primary responsibilities will be divided between extension (70%) and research (30%). The successful candidate will establish a significant extension program and will also engage in applied research that supports their extension activities. Mentoring and advising graduate students will be an essential part of this role, along with participation in departmental, college, and university activities.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Sustainable Biomaterials, Forest Products Marketing, Bioproducts Marketing, Operations Management, Business, Forestry, Wood Science, or a related discipline
  • Ability to secure funding to support a vibrant research and extension program
  • Capability to develop and maintain a nationally recognized extension initiative
  • Strong communication skills
  • Proven track record of publishing and presenting scholarly work
  • Demonstrated potential for success in research design, grant writing, and presenting findings at academic conferences

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience mentoring and supporting both graduate and undergraduate students
  • Evidence of stakeholder engagement and the ability to create and deliver educational content through various formats
  • A demonstrated record of scholarship that aligns with existing sustainable biomaterials programs
  • Interest and experience in collaborating with state or federal agencies, NGOs, private sector, or a combination of these entities
  • Leadership experience in managing teams
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse colleagues and clients to foster cohesive programs across research and extension missions
