Avila Beach, California, United States PG&E Corporation Full time

Requisition ID: Not specified

Job Category: Engineering / Science

Job Level: Individual Contributor

Business Unit: Generation

Work Type: Hybrid

Location: Not specified

Department Overview

The mission of Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP) is to safely produce clean, dependable, and cost-effective energy for communities in California. We encourage innovative thinking to enhance our operations and work environment. We actively learn from our experiences and those of others, aiming to enrich our communities and the environment while building public trust in nuclear energy.

Position Summary

This role is classified as an exempt position represented by ESC and is currently subject to collective bargaining agreements.

The Nuclear Chemistry Engineer position is a journey-level role that demands a comprehensive understanding of the skills and responsibilities associated with the Associate level Nuclear Chemistry Engineer. This position involves leading more intricate projects and tasks with minimal supervision. The engineer will utilize independent judgment to apply chemical principles, collaborate with various disciplines, and work alongside chemistry engineers, foremen, and technicians to assess operational needs. Responsibilities extend beyond those of an associate Nuclear Chemistry Engineer and include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing chemical analytical methodologies.
  • Drafting operational procedures.
  • Conducting technical studies and generating reports.
  • Providing guidance to contractors and external vendors.
  • Offering nuclear chemistry engineering support for routine projects.
  • Enhancing knowledge of plant systems and their chemical and mechanical interactions.

Employment Requirements

To secure and maintain employment, candidates must successfully pass a drug and alcohol screening, a security background check for unescorted access to a nuclear facility, a psychological evaluation, and may be subject to random drug and alcohol testing in compliance with federal regulations.

Compensation Information

PG&E is sharing the salary range that the company believes it might offer for this position at the time of posting. This compensation range is specific to the job's locality. The actual salary will be determined based on various factors, including specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity. While it is anticipated that the successful candidate will be positioned towards the midpoint or entry point of the range, the final decision will be made on a case-by-case basis.

A reasonable salary range is as follows:

California Minimum: $110,964

California Maximum: $168,756

Key Responsibilities

During this period, assignments will typically involve assisting with one or more work areas or managing one of the areas outlined under the duties of the Associate Nuclear Chemistry Engineer, including Primary Chemistry, Secondary Chemistry, Radiochemistry, Radioactive and Non-Radioactive Effluents, and Auxiliary Chemistry. These tasks will require minimal supervision, and as experience grows, independence and responsibilities will increase, potentially eliminating the need for oversight. The engineer may hold a position related to chemistry or otherwise to support plant needs within the Emergency Response Organization or participate in an ERO team, such as a Scenario Development Team.

Problem-solving will involve issues of moderate complexity, with assignments generally requiring standard solutions that are regularly reviewed.

External communications will primarily involve coordinating, discussing, and reporting progress with third parties, including contractors and vendors. The engineer may also guide the work of less experienced team members and exchange information with others outside the team. Internal contacts will include clients and project team members.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Demonstrated mastery of the Associate level Nuclear Chemistry Engineer responsibilities or equivalent experience, with a minimum of three years in Chemistry Engineering or a related field.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Knowledge of ANSI Chemistry and Radiochemistry.
  • Ability to apply fundamental chemistry principles and theories.
  • Skill in prioritizing, planning, and recommending solutions for basic assignments.
  • Organized approach to work with limited supervision to meet project commitments.
  • Demonstrated good judgment in decision-making and recommendations.
  • Proactive initiative and action-taking.
