The Senior Commissioning Engineer plays a crucial role in overseeing the commissioning processes for various systems within a data center environment. This position is accountable for the commissioning of base building systems, security frameworks, life safety mechanisms, as well as Electrical, Mechanical, and EPMS/BMS systems. The engineer will manage, document, and monitor diverse commissioning activities, ensuring thorough testing and validation of connectivity, network infrastructure, security, life safety, and other essential subsystems.

This position demands flexibility in work hours to accommodate construction and commissioning tasks, which may include evening and weekend shifts. The role may also involve significant travel, estimated at around 75%, to various sites across the United States.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with the QTS Development Team and external construction resources to ensure that system design, installation, and testing comply with operational standards.
  • Formulate detailed commissioning strategies for various system levels, including connectivity, network infrastructure, security, life safety, and other building subsystems.
  • Execute comprehensive commissioning tasks, confirming that all systems are installed, tested, and validated per industry standards and client requirements.
  • Identify and address any issues during the commissioning process, working closely with the project team to resolve technical challenges and providing feedback for continuous improvement.
  • Create and review commissioning documentation, including test protocols, reports, and as-built records, ensuring precision and thoroughness.
  • Observe equipment testing during commissioning and validate operational sequences and documentation.
  • Work with cross-functional teams, including design engineers, project managers, contractors, and facilities operations, to ensure smooth integration of systems without disrupting ongoing operations.
  • Implement quality control measures to uphold the highest standards during the build and commissioning phases, adhering to regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • Develop and test site-specific standard operating procedures (SOP), methods of procedures (MOP), and emergency response procedures (ERP) in collaboration with facilities operations.
  • Provide training to end-users and maintenance teams on the operation and upkeep of commissioned systems.
  • Utilize the Change Management Process for maintenance approvals and documentation, ensuring compliance with established procedures.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Project Management, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in data center engineering, commissioning, project management, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with building maintenance, CCTV and access control systems, networking, telecommunications, and fire detection/suppression systems.
  • Willingness to travel to various Data Center locations as needed.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
  • US Citizenship is required for this position due to federal customer contracts.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong understanding of mechanical and electrical systems and design related to data centers.
  • Knowledge of electricity and medium to low voltage electrical distribution systems.
  • Experience with emergency backup systems, including generators and UPS.
  • Familiarity with various mechanical cooling solutions.
  • Understanding of equipment operation, maintenance, and critical work sequences.

  • Ability to analyze system operations, diagnose issues, and implement corrective actions.
  • Capability to acquire and apply job-related knowledge effectively.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Proficient computer skills, including familiarity with MS Office and web-based applications.
