Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Histotechnologist III to join our team at the University of Maryland Medical System. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for preparing patient tissue samples for microscopic examination to render a diagnosis.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Process surgical specimens by loading, unloading, and programming the tissue processors.
  2. Embed tissue samples according to department-specific protocols with proper orientation.
  3. Prepare quality slides following departmental microtomy protocols.
  4. Perform routine H&E and Special Staining, both automated and manually.
  5. Accurately accession specimens into the Laboratory Information System.
  6. Perform frozen sections as needed.
  7. Use and maintain laboratory equipment, including tissue processors, stainers, coverslippers, microtomes, computers, and printers.
  8. Complete microscopic quality control review of slides.
  9. Perform ancillary tasks such as filing, cleaning, and maintaining inventory of supplies.
  10. Monitor pending work, resolve specimen issues, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment.
  11. Maintain equipment and temperature quality control logs.
  12. Assist in training new team members and students as needed.
  13. Prepare cases for send-out to reference labs for specialized testing.
  14. Maintain the tissue control inventory for special stains and immunohistochemistry.
  15. Oversee the service, preventative maintenance, and calibration schedules of laboratory equipment.
  16. Perform additional tasks as assigned.
Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you must have:

  • A minimum of three years of experience working in a laboratory setting.
  • Basic knowledge of theory and concept of immunohistochemistry.
  • HT/HTL (ASCP) certificate or eligibility for certification.
