Job Summary:

The University of Maryland Medical System is seeking a highly skilled Histotechnologist III to join our team. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for performing all aspects of routine histology to prepare patient tissue samples for microscopic examination.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Process surgical specimens by loading, unloading, and programming tissue processors to ensure accurate and efficient processing.
  • Embed tissue samples according to department-specific protocols with proper orientation to ensure high-quality slides.
  • Prepare quality slides following departmental microtomy protocols to meet the needs of our pathologists.
  • Perform routine H&E and Special Staining, both automated and manually, to provide accurate diagnostic results.
  • Accurately accession specimens into our Laboratory Information System to ensure accurate tracking and reporting.
  • Perform frozen sections as needed to support our clinical teams.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, including tissue processors, stainers, coverslippers, microtomes, computers, and printers, to ensure optimal performance and efficiency.
  • Complete microscopic quality control review of slides to ensure accuracy and quality.
  • Perform ancillary tasks, such as filing, cleaning, and maintaining inventory of supplies, to support the smooth operation of our laboratory.
  • Monitor pending work, resolve specimen issues, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment to minimize delays and ensure accurate results.
  • Maintain equipment and temperature quality control logs to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in training new team members and students as needed to ensure knowledge transfer and continuity.
  • Prepare cases for send-out to reference labs for specialized testing to support our clinical teams.
  • Maintain the tissue control inventory for special stains and immunohistochemistry to ensure accurate and efficient testing.
  • Oversee the service, preventative maintenance, and calibration schedules of laboratory equipment to ensure optimal performance and efficiency.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned to support the needs of our laboratory team.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree in a related field preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in histology or a related field; experience in a hospital or medical laboratory setting preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of histology principles and techniques, including tissue processing, embedding, and staining.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and reports, with attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and stand for long periods, with ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
