Job Summary

The Cook County Health and Hospitals System is seeking a skilled Nurse Clinician to join our team in the Recovery Room Nursing Department. As a key member of our perioperative services team, you will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care and collaborating with physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement departmental protocols for scheduling surgical patients
  • Collaborate with nursing management and staff to ensure efficient and effective utilization of the operating room
  • Communicate and collaborate with surgical scheduling office and daily anesthesia board runner
  • Round in the OR to assist with patient throughput and troubleshoot problems
  • Proactively communicate changes to the room schedule with anesthesia, surgeon, and nursing staff
  • Adjust staff and schedule to facilitate optimal care for urgent and emergent cases
  • Utilize electronic tracking boards to maximize patient throughput
  • Monitor efficient operating room turnover
  • Communicate with interdepartmental personnel to facilitate efficient patient throughput
  • Collaborate with nursing management in effective use of service leads assignments
  • Collaborate with service leads on coordination of care for specific patient populations
  • Monitor staff adherence to protocols and procedures
  • Provide feedback to perioperative services leadership for annual staff competencies and education
  • Maintain a safe environment for staff, patients, physicians, and visitors
  • Verify physician and ancillary personnel credentialing when in question
  • Investigate patient care problems and complaints and promptly seek solutions
  • Participate in multidisciplinary conferences held in the department
  • Identify topics for ongoing discussion and education
  • Plan, organize, and monitor the orientation of new staff
  • Provide feedback on new hires for past experience, education/knowledge, and plans during orientation
  • Monitor the progress of orientee doing problem solving as needed
  • Under the direction of perioperative services leadership, assist with unit-based quality improvement program and initiatives
  • Participate in QI meetings to discuss ongoing issues and strategies for corrective action
  • Coordinate the department program assisting staff members and others in the collection of data, reporting results to perioperative services leadership, and writing reports as required
  • Ensure monitoring of regulatory requirements and reports as identified by department
  • Attend all mandatory in-services and attend at least one educational seminar or workshop annually which pertains to operating room efficiency
  • Act as a resource person for members of the healthcare team to provide effective and safe patient care
  • Maintain clinical competency as a perioperative registered nurse by performing direct patient care activities (scrubbing/circulating) a minimum of two shifts per month

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or university
  • Licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Illinois
  • Five years of nursing experience in a hospital as a staff nurse
  • Three years of experience in operating room nursing
  • Current Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) Certification
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Certification
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
