Role PurposeUnder the guidance of the Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Medicine & Performance, the Sports Medicine Specialist will assist in delivering athletic training services as part of the sports medicine team for the University’s intercollegiate athletic teams and/or club sports as required, in collaboration with designated medical professionals.
Key ResponsibilitiesAs a member of our Athletic team, the Sports Medicine Specialist will be tasked with the following:
- Collaborate with the Assistant AD for Sports Medicine & Performance to manage the Athletic Training Facilities and provide athletic training services, including attending scheduled team practices and home and away competitions as necessary.
- Deliver athletic training services for the University’s athletics division, encompassing prevention, assessment, clinical evaluation, immediate care, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning of athletic injuries.
- Be prepared for frequent evening and weekend hours, as well as early morning shifts.
- Participate in team travel to provide athletic training services at select away intercollegiate events.
- Assist in the daily operations of the athletic training facilities in coordination with the Assistant AD for Sports Medicine & Performance.
- Implement established emergency action plans for the University’s athletic facilities and off-campus venues.
- Enforce all policies and procedures as outlined in the Sports Medicine policy/procedure manual, including codes of conduct and rules for the athletic training facility and equipment usage.
- Advise coaches and strength and conditioning staff on flexibility, strength, and conditioning programs to prevent injuries and enhance performance.
- Consult with Team Physicians regarding the treatment of injured student-athletes and monitor their recovery progress.
- Maintain accurate medical records for all injuries, treatments, rehabilitation, and physician referrals.
- Assist in managing the athletic training room file system.
- Act as a liaison for student-athletes among physicians, coaches, athletes, parents, and other healthcare providers as necessary.
- Work collaboratively with the Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Medicine & Performance and sport coaches to ensure student-athletes participate only when physically capable and that all physician directives are understood and adhered to.
- Comply with all health care delivery policies as indicated by University regulations, including timely completion of university insurance claims as needed.
- Assist in the collection, maintenance, and confidentiality of all student-athletes' current contact, emergency contact, health insurance, consent, and health-status documents.
- Support the organization and administration of an Exposure Control Plan for Bloodborne Pathogens in accordance with state health department and occupational safety regulations.
- Assist with pre-participation examinations for prospective student-athletes as needed.
- Implement injury prevention strategies through protective tapings, wraps, braces, and equipment, and assist in designing practices to minimize injury risk.
- Provide immediate care for athletic injuries and refer student-athletes to emergency medical facilities when necessary.
- Design and oversee rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries under the direction of Team Physicians or other referring medical professionals.
- Assist with inventory management of sports medicine supplies.
- Educate, counsel, and advise athletes on health-related matters, including nutrition and substance abuse.
- Operate the program in compliance with University, NCAA, and ECC regulations, understanding that violations may result in disciplinary actions.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Medicine & Performance and/or Athletics Director.
- Bachelor's degree in athletic training, exercise science, health, or a related field.
- Master's degree and prior collegiate athletic training experience preferred.
- Strong time management, interpersonal, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to adopt a collaborative approach to student-athlete health care delivery.
- Capability to work extended hours under conditions requiring moderate physical exertion.
- Ability to endure long periods of standing, frequent bending, stooping, walking, and lifting.
- Willingness to work outdoors and tolerate extreme weather conditions.
- Availability for early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and travel with teams as necessary.
- Valid driver's license required, meeting insurance underwriting criteria.
