Job Overview

Texas Department of Transportation seeks a skilled Highway Maintenance Assistant I to oversee work in Shackelford County. This role involves assisting the Maintenance Section Supervisor in managing crews and contractors, ensuring safe driving conditions within designated areas. As a key member of the team, you will lead Transportation Maintenance Crew Chiefs, technical staff, and clerical personnel. The ideal candidate should have 5 years of experience in roadway maintenance or construction-related work, with a valid Commercial Class A Driver License (CDL) and no restrictions.

Responsibilities:
  • Assist in budget preparation for the section.
  • Issue driveway permits and estimate drainage pipe sizes.
  • Oversee the work of crews and contractors, scheduling equipment, materials, and personnel as needed.
  • Plan and coordinate emergency responses to inclement weather, accidents, and hazardous spills affecting area roadways.
  • Complete reports on damaged railings and bridges.
  • Evaluate projects for adherence to established safety guidelines.
  • Handle public complaints and ensure effective communication with stakeholders.
  • Inspect road conditions, work-in-progress, and completed projects.
  • Train employees on equipment use and procedures.

Requirements:
  • High school graduate or equivalent in general high school studies.
  • 5 years of experience in roadway maintenance or construction-related work.
  • Valid Commercial Class A Driver License (CDL) with no restrictions.

As a Safety Impact position, this role requires passing a pre-employment physical and random drug testing. Work hours may be outside normal working hours, including holidays and weekends. You must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
