Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Public Health Registered Nurse to join our team at the Tulsa Health Department. As a Public Health Registered Nurse, you will be responsible for providing public health nursing services to the public and participating in community health activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interview patients to obtain medical history and update records, and explain medical forms and assist patients in form completion.
  • Review client admission paperwork, eligibility criteria, BCD, and fee payments to determine the correct public or private funding resources to utilize.
  • Maintain accurate product inventory and follow quality assurance protocols for safe handling and storage of biologicals.
  • Review and evaluate immunization records and administer immunizations.
  • Perform assessments, testing, screening, and treatment services to clients using Physician Approved Protocols.
  • Collect and prepare lab specimens as needed and per established guidelines, and complete necessary requisitions for specific lab tests to ensure proper routing of all specimens.
  • Apply knowledge of all contraceptive methods, including emergency contraception and sterilization, in the provision of comprehensive family planning options/procedures counseling.
  • Recommend, counsel, and administer medication and treatment, and provide instruction on medical procedures to patients according to Physician Approved Protocols.
  • Perform adult health screenings for cholesterol, anemia, blood pressure, blood sugar, and the presence of cervical cancer, and teach breast self-examination and conduct clinical breast exams.
  • Document clinic visits and follow-up actions, prepare and send correspondence for follow-up, and maintain clinic records.
  • Receive calls from patients and counsel regarding problems, follow up on missed appointments and abnormal pap/laboratory results, and maintain necessary records.
  • Extend clinical services and community outreach by assisting with the provision of health education, limited screenings, or immunizations at local health fairs, schools, and Caring Van sites.
  • Participate in orientation processes for new staff and students.
  • Participate in Health Department meetings and community meetings related to health center services.
  • Complete required training in support of duties and responsibilities of this position.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including those required to fulfill activities in support of public health emergency response operations.
Requirements
  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing preferred.
  • Two years of experience as a professional Registered Nurse (RN) preferred.
  • Possession of a permanent registered nurse (RN) license issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing is required.
  • Valid Oklahoma driver's license.
Working Conditions

Regular exposure to communicable disease, contaminated blood, and other body fluids during specimen collection for laboratory analysis. High volume and fast-paced clinic.
