JOB SUMMARY


Under general supervision, this role offers reference and reader's advisory services to library patrons while contributing to the development and execution of library programs. The position is tasked with instructing adult learners in English as a Second Language (ESL) or High School Equivalency (HSE) courses. Responsibilities encompass teaching sessions, crafting lesson plans, and formulating syllabi that comply with educational standards.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Deliver reference and reader's advisory services to the public via phone, in-person, mail, or electronic channels. Utilize effective interviewing techniques, interpret library policies, and apply fundamental research methods to access both print and digital collections. Develop and implement basic search strategies to locate information across various media. Assist patrons in understanding and utilizing different library resources and equipment.
  • Employ foundational knowledge of literature, databases, and diverse learning styles to provide programs, story times, and training sessions tailored to community needs. Engage in outreach initiatives with local organizations, educational institutions, and community centers to foster a lifelong passion for reading and learning.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Manage the processing and organization of new materials in accordance with established library protocols and classification systems.
  • Return library materials to their designated locations using knowledge of classification systems to ensure proper interfiling.
  • Assist patrons with circulation services, effectively communicating library policies and performing basic arithmetic tasks as needed.
  • Support collection development efforts by gathering patron feedback and evaluating materials for potential removal based on condition and usage.
  • Collect and analyze statistics through various methods to inform library services.
  • Collaborate with librarians to design and implement engaging library programs.
  • Occasionally perform additional duties that align with the essential functions of the role.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Familiarity with basic library reference techniques.
  • Understanding of various library classification systems.
  • Proficiency in using print resources, online catalogs, and databases.
  • Ability to instruct individuals or groups in utilizing information sources.
  • Competence in presenting information and programs to diverse audiences.
  • Skill in translating user requests into effective search strategies.
  • Proficiency in word processing, database management, web design, and spreadsheet software.
  • Ability to operate personal computers and access information online.
  • Strong teamwork skills and the ability to collaborate effectively.
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to quickly establish rapport with library users.
  • Physical capability to perform tasks such as sorting, carrying, and filing.
  • Flexibility to work varied schedules as required.

QUALIFYING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant fields such as Business, Liberal Arts, Education, History, Sciences, Literature, Psychology, Computer Science, Information Management, or Child Development.
  • Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid Texas Operator Class C License.
