Machine Learning Engineering Manager

The Washington Post is seeking a highly skilled Machine Learning Engineering Manager to lead our team of applied machine learning scientists in building the next generation of journalism-driven personalization systems. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for leading cross-functional agile teams, collaborating with other technical staff, and building and maintaining scalable machine learning infrastructure.
Responsibilities:- Lead, mentor, and manage cross-functional agile teams of applied machine learning scientists
- Collaborate with other technical staff to build and maintain scalable machine learning infrastructure
- Provide leadership and guidance in problem-solving, ensuring best practices are followed for statistical analysis, model development, and machine learning techniques
- Oversee the end-to-end development and deployment of machine learning models, ensuring they are scalable, maintainable, and aligned with organizational goals
- Collaborate with business teams to align machine learning products with strategic objectives, deriving insights from large and complex datasets to inform feature and product development
- Establish and implement processes, best practices, and tooling for continuous integration, delivery, and monitoring to ensure high-quality machine learning solutions
- Manage the technical roadmap, balancing innovation with the need for stability and performance while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and learning within the team
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field
- 6+ years of experience in machine learning, data science, or applied artificial intelligence
- 2+ years of experience in managing and leading technical teams, with demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, and develop engineering talent
- 2+ years of hands-on experience with Python and relevant ML libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn)
- Experience in deploying ML models in production environments, including using cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and ML infrastructure tools (e.g., Kubernetes, Docker)
