Job Summary

The Infection Control Preventionist is a key member of our healthcare team, responsible for identifying, investigating, and preventing the spread of hospital-associated infections among patients and personnel. This role requires a comprehensive knowledge of infection control practices, including CDC guidelines, TJC standards, and federal and state regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct concurrent infection control surveillance and utilize targeted patient and employee surveillance indicators to identify areas for improvement.
  • Aggregate and analyze infection control data and present findings to appropriate audiences, including community awareness.
  • Develop, review, and revise infection control policies and procedures as indicated or at a minimum every 3 years.
  • Implement a system for identifying, investigating, reporting, and preventing the spread of hospital-associated infections among patients of all ages and healthcare personnel.
  • Maintain accurate records of hospital-associated infections among patients.
  • Review cultures and sensitivities reported by the microbiology laboratory to determine if infections are hospital-associated in origin.
  • Ensure measures for prevention of patient infections are in place relative to IV therapy, indwelling catheters, surgical sites, etc.
  • Confer with staff nurses and medical staff to determine occurrence of hospital-acquired infections and implement appropriate isolation precautions.
  • Investigate infections, especially those occurring above established thresholds and/or in clusters by patient units.
  • Report environmental hazards and implement corrective action to optimize patient safety and reduce the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors.
  • Assist with in-service education related to infection prevention and control.
  • Complete Notifiable Disease reports and forward them to the Tennessee Department of Health in a timely and accurate manner.
Requirements
  • Current RN licensure in the State of Tennessee.
  • Current BLS Certification upon hire.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in infection control practice in a hospital setting preferred.
  • Certification by the Board of Practitioners of Infection Control and Epidemiology, preferred.
