This position is located within the Nutrition & Food Service at the VA Medical Center in Fargo, North Dakota.
As a Food Service Worker, you will provide support services in preparing foods, tray delivery, and related duties to serve the Veterans.
The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers.
You will operate in a model with three core elements, seeking to create a personalized health plan for each Veteran.
This aligns with the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Mission Statement to Honor America's Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being.
Responsibilities- Set up and break down assigned station with the correct supplies and food items
- Portion food items into standard serving sizes using the proper utensils and specified dishware
- Decide what food items to serve for the most common diets
- Identify obvious discrepancies between the prescribed diets and the food items
- Set up dining room tables for service, place food and beverages on tables, and replenish items as necessary
- Report patients' comments and complaints to the supervisor or dietitian
- Provide assistance to cooks in the food preparation area, such as weigh, measure, and assemble ingredients according to standardized recipes
- Perform heavy-duty cleaning tasks throughout the food service and related areas
Varies Sunday through Saturday, to include rotating holidays and weekends

Work ConditionsWork is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity
May be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing large size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading

Prior experience in food service or a related field is preferred
Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities
Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP)
It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons
VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers, and VA-leased medical facilities
HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, remote and onsite, paid and without compensation, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, researchers, volunteers, and health professions trainees (HPTs) who are expected to perform any or all of their work at these facilities
HPTs may be paid or unpaid and include residents, interns, fellows, and students
HCP also includes VHA personnel providing home-based care to Veterans and drivers and other personnel whose duties put them in contact with patients outside VA medical facilities
