Job Summary:

MedStar Health is seeking a skilled Respiratory Therapist to join our team. The ideal candidate will possess excellent patient assessment and treatment skills, with the ability to perform adult pulmonary function testing, stress testing, arterial punctures, and pulse oximetry.

This role requires a high level of technical expertise, with the ability to operate complex diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. The successful candidate will also possess strong communication skills, with the ability to consult with physicians and provide high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform adult pulmonary function testing, including spirometry, flow loops, Helium dilution, nitrogen washout, and plethysmograph lung volume, diffusion capacity, broncho-dilator & methacholine studies, arterial blood gas draws, pulse oximetry, and maximum inspiratory and expiratory pressure measurements.
  • Conduct bronchospasm evaluations to determine the effect of medication on pulmonary abilities reflected by previous pulmonary function studies.
  • Perform all required calibrations, maintain documentation for review by regulatory agencies, and complete all patient histories, demographic data, and billing information.
  • Update and maintain the patient database, schedule appointments and follow-ups, and make appropriate confirmation calls.
  • Complete all paperwork for each patient visit, utilizing the correct codes and documentation for follow-up.
  • Make notations of test results and calibration from equipment for physician review.
  • Modify treatment and testing plans to appropriate pediatric formats for all non-adult patients.
  • Maintain files for completed testing and offer instruction and therapy in anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system.
  • Order all medical, miscellaneous, and drug supplies for each laboratory use, maintain cleanliness, order, and safety of labs, and keep equipment in good functioning order.
  • Perform billing for Physician part of the neuro-diagnostic testing, maintain records, and files completed paperwork appropriately.
  • Participate in meetings and on committees, and represent the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
Requirements:
  • Associate degree in Respiratory Therapy or equivalent in an allied health profession with concentrated study in mathematics and/or physics.
  • Statistical knowledge is essential.
  • Knowledge of arterial blood draws, spirometry, flow volume loops, diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO), lung volumes, bronchodilator and methacholine measurements and calibrations.
  • Knowledge of both adult and pediatric pulmonary functions and test procedures.
  • Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT), Certified Pulmonary Function Technician (CPFT), or Professional Registration as a Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT) must be obtained within 1 Year.
Preferred Certification:

Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
