Job Summary

Key Responsibilities
  • Answer and direct emergency and non-emergency telephone calls, providing critical information and support to callers.
  • Enter information into CAD and RMS systems, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Relay vital information to patrol officers, fire personnel, and other emergency responders, ensuring effective communication and response.
  • Maintain accurate radio logs, telephone logs, and computerized department inventories, ensuring compliance with departmental policies and procedures.
  • Complete warrant, case, and photographic files, and type reports, ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Utilize state and federal telecommunications systems to send and receive teletype messages, respond to requests for criminal record checks, and process criminal history records checks.
  • Provide customer service at the counter, receiving and disbursing fees, and obtaining copies of accident/incident reports and other documents.
  • Perform basic clerical duties, including filing, scanning, copying, and faxing documents.
  • Serve as the front-line operator of the City's mass notification system, ensuring timely and effective communication with the public.
  • Monitor, update, and respond to the police department's social media pages, ensuring accurate and timely information.
  • Perform periodic checks on prisoners in the holding cell and monitor city security video, ensuring safety and security.
  • Complete continuing education training annually to maintain proficiency and certifications.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Prior experience in public safety communications is desirable, but not required.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must successfully complete a pre-employment security clearance check and maintain a good moral character.
  • Must complete all job-related training and certifications within the first six months of employment.
Working Conditions

The Communications Officer will work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, requiring strong communication and problem-solving skills. The position involves frequent contact with the public, emergency responders, and other city departments. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively in a team environment, maintain confidentiality, and handle stressful situations.
