Santa Fe, New Mexico, United States Thornburg Investment Management Full time
Job Overview

Thornburg Investment Management is a distinguished global investment firm dedicated to delivering strategic solutions for institutions, financial professionals, and investors across the globe. Established in 1982, this privately owned firm excels in managing fixed income, equities, and multi-asset strategies with a high-conviction approach.

As an independent entity, Thornburg embraces a diverse array of opportunities, thoroughly exploring innovative ideas and collaborating across various strategies to achieve consistent risk-adjusted outperformance over the long haul. The firm attracts forward-thinking professionals who are motivated to pursue investment outcomes that transcend conventional wisdom. With agile operational capabilities and a commitment to global citizenship, Thornburg's premier investment platform and team are unified in their strategic mission to serve investors effectively.

Position Summary

At Thornburg, we highly value curiosity, initiative, and a sincere interest in teamwork. Equity Research Specialists function as global generalists, analyzing stocks across different sectors and regions to enhance the success of all Thornburg investment strategies. Our firm is fundamentally focused, oriented towards long-term growth, and operates as a privately held entity.

In this role, analysts collaborate directly with portfolio managers and colleagues to assess existing portfolio holdings and evaluate new investment opportunities. Analysts conduct in-depth investigations of companies by qualitatively and quantitatively analyzing their fundamental attributes, engaging with teammates to develop a comprehensive perspective. We are committed to integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors into our analytical processes. Analysts create financial forecasts and present well-structured theses and recommendations to portfolio teams through presentations, written reports, and one-on-one discussions. The research and recommendations provided will significantly influence client outcomes and contribute to the firm's overall success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain a high-performance mindset while fostering collaboration with colleagues. Compete against the market and other asset managers, but not against each other.
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses of equity securities and articulate investment convictions.
  • Provide insights into business strengths and weaknesses, as well as a company's capacity to execute its strategic plans.
  • Utilize skills in creative thinking, problem-solving, accounting, finance, and economics to develop and maintain financial models for individual companies.
  • Continuously monitor covered companies to interpret and communicate developments that may affect share price performance, including company-specific news and macroeconomic or policy changes.
  • Serve in a global generalist capacity, with responsibilities spanning various geographies, industries, and investment styles.
  • Exemplify leadership by modeling excellence, diligence, and professionalism in all aspects of the role.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to junior team members, offering guidance, support, and constructive feedback to facilitate their professional growth.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Employer-sponsored 401(k) safe harbor and profit-sharing contributions.
  • Work/life balance programs, including flexible work arrangements, paid time off, parental leave, employee assistance plans, commuter benefits, and education reimbursement.
  • Opportunities for community involvement.
  • Onsite cafeteria and fitness center.
  • Referral program.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree - required
  • MBA or progress towards a CFA designation - preferred
  • FINRA series 7 and 63 required, or the ability to pass these exams within twelve months of employment.
  • Several years of experience in roles involving analytical thinking, financial forecasting, business strategy, business operations, or equity research and analysis, including:
    • 5+ years as an equity-oriented buyside or sellside research analyst, or
    • 5+ years in investment banking, private equity, consulting, or a related field, or
    • 5+ years in a financial or accounting role such as corporate strategy, corporate development, or investor relations.
  • Broad intellectual curiosity and a strong interest in investing.
  • Strong analytical skills to connect insights and understand business trends, financial outcomes, assess valuations, and consider ESG characteristics.
  • Ability and willingness to conduct thorough research and provide high-quality analysis for potential or current investments.
  • Effective communication skills for conveying complex ideas both verbally and in writing.
  • Adaptability and flexibility in response to changing facts or new information.
  • A commitment to contributing to the organization's success through respect and support for all employees, collaboration with the broader team, open communication, personal accountability, and a focus on achieving optimal outcomes for clients.
  • Proven experience in managing and mentoring equity analysts, with a track record of developing talent and fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally.
