Overview

Under the guidance of supervisory personnel, oversees and/or manages the functionality of designated mechanical systems at a wastewater treatment facility, sludge management site, or pumping station, while assessing various equipment components for optimal performance. This role is distinguished by the necessity for substantial expertise and experience in handling a diverse range of intricate machinery.

Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities outlined here are essential, core functions typical of roles within this classification. Operates or oversees the operation of designated mechanical systems at a water reclamation facility, pumping station, or sludge management site, ensuring various components are functioning correctly. Manages the operation of a range of sophisticated high-pressure, high-temperature, high-speed processing equipment, including pumps, blowers, turbines, generators, boilers, centrifuges, digesters, and ancillary equipment as well as environmental systems within the facility. Conducts inspections of the operational status of assigned machinery throughout the facility, identifying any issues such as wear, excessive vibration, or corrosion, and implements immediate corrective actions to sustain efficient operations. Maintains precise operational logs and records of equipment parameters, generating comprehensive reports that recommend necessary repairs. May oversee personnel within a water reclamation facility or pumping station, consulting with supervisors regarding personnel-related issues. Ensures all work is conducted safely in accordance with established safety protocols and regulations.

Additional Responsibilities

Engages in special projects that pertain to operational processes. Investigates various causes of equipment malfunctions and troubleshoots issues related to facility or equipment outages when time permits. Participates in corrective or disciplinary actions concerning personnel when necessary. Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

May involve exposure to various mechanical systems and high noise levels and/or unpleasant odors. Work may be conducted in diverse weather conditions throughout the facility and collection system.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Extensive knowledge of the operation and maintenance of pumps, motors, and related electrical and mechanical systems, as well as high-pressure steam boilers. Comprehensive understanding of the occupational hazards and safety measures relevant to the work. Proficient in diagnosing electrical and mechanical issues with equipment. Capable of reading and interpreting a wide range of measuring and testing instruments associated with facility operations. Ability to plan and supervise the work of others in a manner that promotes high performance and morale. Competent in maintaining records and submitting reports both orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must possess a valid City of Chicago Stationary Engineer's License. A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with four years of relevant operational experience.

Substitution Policy

Additional experience may be considered in lieu of the required education on a year-for-year basis. Successful completion of a recognized training program in the operation of stationary equipment may substitute for the required experience on a month-for-month basis, up to a maximum of one year.

Promotional Requirements

One year of service with the District as an Operating Engineer I. Civil service status as an Operating Engineer I.
