Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our team at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for directing the activities of a major work section, overseeing the maintenance and operation of water reclamation plants and outlying facilities, and ensuring compliance with permits and regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assigns, directs, and reviews work; enforces guidelines and District policy; administers grievances; recommends actions determining employee status.
  • Plans, coordinates, administers, and reviews ongoing engineering maintenance work, including machinery, pumps, blowers, controls, piping, boilers, and centrifuges.
  • Reviews and prepares engineering and economic studies relative to the mechanical engineering aspects of the plant.
  • Supervises the preparation of designs, estimates, plans, and specifications for mechanical work in connection with pumping stations and water reclamation plants.
  • Coordinates the preparation of contract drawings and specifications; supervises and participates in the preparation of construction contract correspondence, technical reports, and other pertinent correspondence.
  • Prepares and administers the Mechanical Engineering Section budget.
  • Confers with and advises division and other section heads regarding mechanical design, development, and construction and operating problems.
Requirements
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois.
  • Graduation from a four-year accredited college or university majoring in mechanical engineering and eight years of full-time, post-degree mechanical engineering experience.
  • Four years of this experience must have been in work related to the District's activities, three years of this experience must have been in the supervision of degreed engineers, and one year must have been in an administrative capacity.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Full-time graduate study in mechanical engineering may be substituted for the required non-specialized experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years.
  • Civil service status in one of the foregoing classifications.
