Monterey, California, United States Department of Food & Agriculture Full time

Position Overview

The Department of Food & Agriculture is seeking dedicated individuals who are committed to promoting safe agricultural practices in California. As part of our Produce Safety Program, we are looking for Environmental Scientists to engage with farmers and assist them in understanding and adhering to the Produce Safety Rule (PSR). If you possess strong communication skills and a background in food safety, we encourage you to consider this opportunity.

Key Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist, the Environmental Scientist will be tasked with conducting thorough environmental evaluations and inspections on farms to ensure compliance with the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and the PSR. This role emphasizes the FDA's principle of educating stakeholders prior to regulatory enforcement.

The selected candidate will be responsible for:

  • Performing on-site inspections to verify adherence to PSR standards.
  • Facilitating effective training and communication with agricultural producers.
  • Utilizing a prioritized approach for statewide inspections and procedural activities.
  • Covering the Central Coast Region, including various counties, while being open to travel across California as necessary.

Working Environment

This position requires collaboration with colleagues, consistent attendance, and sound judgment. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential. The role involves a mix of remote work and travel, necessitating a valid California driver's license.

The work environment is diverse, with approximately 70% of the time spent outdoors conducting field inspections and assessments, and 30% indoors performing administrative tasks. Outdoor duties may include navigating uneven terrain and using sampling equipment, while indoor responsibilities will involve office work and electronic communication.

Special Qualifications

Candidates must obtain FDA Commission with Credential as a condition of employment, which involves a comprehensive background check. A valid California Driver's License is also required.

Application Process

Interested applicants must submit a Statement of Qualifications along with their application, detailing their experience and interest in this position.
