Position Overview:

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Nurse Residency Program is tasked with engaging in all essential quality and core curriculum sessions, participating actively in professional growth workshops and peer support gatherings, and successfully fulfilling all clinical competencies and validation criteria of the Nurse Residency Program.

This role operates under the direct and indirect guidance of the Clinical Education Team while enhancing nursing knowledge and skills.


Clinical Responsibilities:

Actively involved in managing clinical scenarios assigned to them under the direct supervision of a licensed Registered Nurse (RN), who oversees all clinical experiences, documentation, and procedures within the clinical setting.

All team members are expected to be well-versed and compliant with Prisma Health's Compassion Standards, Mission, Vision, and Values, which emphasize compassion, dignity, excellence, integrity, and teamwork.

Compliance with organizational policies and procedures is mandatory, including but not limited to: licensure renewal, assigned training, employee health screenings, attendance policies, dress code, patient confidentiality, and infection control.

New Graduates:

If you are a recent graduate or an LPN with less than one year of nursing experience, our Nurse Residency Program is designed for you. Prisma Health is dedicated to providing new graduate nurses with a robust foundation to launch their nursing careers.

The nurse residency program integrates foundational and specialty-specific clinical core curriculum, quality classes, simulation, one-on-one skills validation, hands-on application with clinical mentors, and professional development.


Key Responsibilities:
  1. Data Collection:

    Gather patient information and complete necessary documentation with appropriate responses according to unit standards; identify patient problems/needs and communicate with the RN; review and record the latest diagnostic results; provide patient care under the direct supervision of the licensed RN.

  2. Care Planning:

    Engage in the interdisciplinary care team to contribute to the care plan based on the nursing process, incorporating plans from other disciplines and ongoing care needs; refer to multidisciplinary support services under the direct supervision of the licensed RN.

  3. Care Implementation:

    Deliver care that adheres to accepted practice standards; provide treatments/procedures and other care as prescribed and according to patient care standards; demonstrate understanding of age-related characteristics and needs of patients served; explain nursing procedures; provide discharge education; identify emergency situations and escalate to the RN; advocate for patient care with other healthcare personnel and evaluate instituted patient care measures; respect patient rights and utilize established mechanisms for managing ethical issues in patient care under the direct supervision of the licensed RN.

  4. Evaluation:

    Document patient care delivered as planned and any variations, with appropriate rationale; make and record observations related to impending or associated problems; implement nursing measures related to impending or associated problems under the direct supervision of the licensed RN.

  5. Leadership:

    Incorporate cost-effective measures into nursing practice; recognize unit challenges and take responsibility for escalating to the RN; actively participate in quality improvement processes; comply with hospital expectations to meet staffing demands based on patient care needs; adhere to policies addressing safe working conditions; monitor unsafe working conditions; identify inappropriate and/or ineffective patient care management, resolve issues/problems, and complete written reports; fulfill call for unit as assigned and adjust staffing for census (volume) and acuity under the direct supervision of the licensed RN.


Supervisory/Management Responsibilities:

This is a non-management position that will report to a supervisor, manager, director, or executive.


Minimum Qualifications:

Completion of a LPN program recognized by the SC State Board of Nursing. Candidates with more than 12 months of LPN experience are not eligible to participate.


Required Certifications/Registrations/Licenses:

Licensed to practice as a LPN in South Carolina.

In Lieu Of The Above Minimum Requirements:

In lieu of completion of a LPN program, will accept program equivalency recognized by the SC State Board of Nursing.
