Job Summary

Columbia University is seeking a skilled MRI Technologist I to join our team. As a key member of our diagnostic imaging department, you will be responsible for performing a wide range of technical procedures utilizing magnetic resonance imaging and other modalities to obtain high-quality images of designated portions of the body.

Key Responsibilities
  • Patient Safety and Screening: Ensure patient safety by screening for medical conditions, allergy history, and foreign objects such as metal implants, pacemakers, aneurysm clips, hearing aids, and shrapnel.
  • Exam Appropriateness: Confirm the appropriateness of the exam by reviewing the referral form and radiologist protocol and patient questionnaire; bring any discrepancies to the attention of the radiologist.
  • MRI Safety Policy: Ensure patient and equipment safety by following the MRI safety policy and procedure.
  • Scan Performance: Perform scans following standardized protocols, tailoring if needed due to patient variables such as body habitus.
  • Patient Data Management: Maintain and retrieve patient data by appropriate use of PACS and other information systems; generate hard copies when appropriate.
  • Log Book Maintenance: Maintain log books and machine performance data.
  • First Aid Administration: Assist in the administering of first aid as needed.
  • Courtesy and Respect: Display courtesy and respect to all patients, medical staff, visitors, and co-workers.
  • Work Area Maintenance: Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the work area and equipment.
  • Patient Flow Management: Assist in expediting patient flow while maintaining quality.
  • Age-Specific Care: Competent to care for patients based upon the age groups treated.
  • Contrast Media Administration: Competent to administer contrast media via appropriate peripheral IV access as ordered and directed by qualified physician staff while abiding by NY state guidelines (if appropriately certified).
  • Monitoring and Response: Participate along with nursing in monitoring patients pre, during, and post contrast administration for possible allergic reaction to contrast media.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Experience: Two years of MRI experience or successful completion of Hospital-sponsored training program.
  • Licensure and Certification: New York State Licensed X-Ray Technologist by the Department of Health; Registered X-Ray Technologist by American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT); ARRT/MRI certification; New York State license to inject contrast.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Experience with Radiology Information Systems, PACS, Data processing, and digital data transfer process.
