A Lead Mechanical Engineer will oversee and manage all facets of mechanical engineering, focusing on HVAC systems, hydronic piping, plumbing, and energy assessments for diverse building design projects, including commercial and governmental facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Execute comprehensive mechanical engineering design tasks, particularly in HVAC, including initial studies, program requirements, design evaluations, calculations, equipment selection, and system layouts.
  • Engage with clients to outline and confirm the proposed scope of work.
  • Oversee and coordinate mechanical engineering projects, ensuring alignment with project managers to meet budgetary constraints, contractual obligations, and project timelines.
  • Facilitate communication and collaboration among multi-disciplinary teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical design with other engineering disciplines.
  • Collaborate with contractors on Design-Build projects to ensure the appropriateness of selected systems.
  • Guide, mentor, and supervise mechanical engineers and designers, ensuring adherence to quality control standards.
  • Manage mechanical engineering support during the bidding phase, including the preparation of addenda and bid tabulations.
  • Supervise mechanical engineering services during the construction phase, including on-site representation, responding to RFIs, and reviewing shop drawings.
  • Coordinate with commissioning services as necessary.
  • Work independently while collaborating with project managers and design leaders.
  • Mentor junior mechanical engineering staff and assist in their professional development.
  • Participate in project presentations to clients, contractors, and stakeholders throughout all project phases.
  • Support company marketing and business development initiatives.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with clients.
  • Provide technical support to mechanical staff.
  • Assist in refining processes and procedures within the practice.
  • Represent leadership in their absence.
  • Conduct training sessions for staff.
  • Contribute to performance evaluations of mechanical engineering staff.

Project Responsibilities:

  • Assume Project Manager duties as assigned.
  • Act as Design Manager on designated projects.
  • Oversee design and documentation of mechanical systems.
  • Develop project plans and methodologies for mechanical design.
  • Create accurate and compliant mechanical drawings and specifications for various project phases.
  • Design control P&IDs for equipment monitoring and operational sequencing.
  • Review calculations and deliverables produced by the project team.
  • Prepare proposals for mechanical components of multi-discipline projects.
  • Assist in project budgeting and scheduling.
  • Conduct quality assurance and quality control reviews on assigned projects.
  • Ensure compliance with discipline code analysis.
  • Develop specifications for mechanical systems.
  • Respond to RFIs and review comments.
  • Conduct site visits to assess installation quality and compliance.
  • Ensure adherence to project budgets and timelines.
  • Travel may be required for project needs.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an ABET-accredited engineering program in Mechanical Engineering or related fields.
  • Postgraduate degrees in relevant fields are advantageous.
  • Must hold a Professional Engineer license in at least one US state.
  • Familiarity with sustainable design principles and LEED accreditation is preferred.
  • Certifications such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or similar are desirable.
  • Active involvement in professional organizations is encouraged.
  • Proficient in current software applications for engineering tasks.
  • 8-15 years of relevant experience in mechanical design and leadership roles.
  • Experience in various project types, including healthcare and commercial sectors, is beneficial.
