Position Overview:

The Senior Power Electronics Engineer - Application Technical Lead is tasked with the integration of variable speed drives into Trane Commercial Systems' HVAC products while providing technical guidance to the Power Electronics Applications Team. This role supports a Hybrid work arrangement (3 days/week on-site) within the Engineering & Technology Center.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee all application aspects for power electronic devices used in Trane Commercial Products manufactured in North America, encompassing new product development and lifecycle management.
  • Provide recommendations for device selection and sizing, establish application specifications, and conduct component-level and system-level qualifications.
  • Mentor and onboard team members within the power electronics application group.
  • Develop standard operating procedures, processes, and best practices.
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) to resolve complex issues encountered in the field and manufacturing environments.
  • Conduct independent reviews for project designs and technical evaluations.
  • Qualify Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) for application in Trane Commercial HVAC products.
  • Implement variable speed drives in HVAC systems, particularly for compressors and fans.
  • Integrate unit-level controls and safety features with the drive systems.
  • Optimize VFD cooling tailored to specific product requirements.
  • Analyze compatibility between motors and drives, tuning the electrical systems for peak performance.
  • Draft specifications for electrical components within the motor-drive systems.
  • Execute qualification testing for the motor-drive systems.
  • Provide ongoing lifecycle support for products, addressing field and factory issues.
  • Willingness to travel overnight as needed, approximately 5-10% of the time.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 7 years of experience in variable frequency drive applications is required.
  • A Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering is advantageous.
Essential Skills and Competencies:
  • Proficient understanding of power electronics and variable speed drive applications.
  • Collaborate effectively within a multi-functional development team to achieve program objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team player with cross-functional or global teams.
  • Capacity for rapid learning and adaptation.

The annual compensation range for this position is $78,000 to $143,000. Please note that this salary range is based on national averages in the U.S. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as experience, merit, and geographic location.
