POSITION SUMMARY: The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides essential medical support under the guidance of healthcare professionals for patients within the oncology clinic. This role is crucial in managing administrative tasks that alleviate the workload of physicians.

REPORTING STRUCTURE: This position reports directly to the Director of Clinical Operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The responsibilities of this role encompass, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting physicians with electronic health record (EHR) documentation to facilitate efficient dictation and billing processes.
  • Collecting and recording comprehensive patient health information, including medical history, physical assessments, diagnostic results, and educational guidance.
  • Observing patient interactions and accurately documenting clinical events and decision-making processes.
  • Supporting the processing of electronic orders for diagnostic imaging, laboratory tests, and prescriptions within the EHR.
  • Adhering to all relevant policies regarding medical scribing.
  • Demonstrating proficient keyboarding skills.
  • Participating in mandatory meetings and contributing to committees as needed.
  • Engaging in professional development opportunities and maintaining relevant professional associations.
  • Executing department-specific tasks as required.
  • Complying with all applicable regulatory policies and procedures.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: The candidate must possess a solid understanding of medical practices and patient care. This includes knowledge of examination protocols, diagnostic procedures, and treatment room operations. Additionally, the candidate should be aware of safety hazards and precautions to ensure a secure working environment. Skills required include:

  • Assisting in various treatments and medication administration as directed.
  • Taking and recording vital signs accurately.
  • Maintaining precise records and documenting test outcomes.
  • Contributing to departmental quality assurance initiatives.
  • Building and sustaining effective relationships with patients, medical personnel, and the community.
  • Exhibiting calmness and effectiveness in emergency situations.
  • Interpreting and applying guidelines and procedures appropriately.
  • Communicating clearly and effectively.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This role requires a full range of motion, including the ability to lift and maneuver patients, along with manual dexterity and coordination. The candidate should be able to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods and occasionally lift items weighing up to 100 pounds. Corrected vision and hearing within normal ranges are necessary, as is the ability to work under stress or irregular hours. Exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids is a possibility.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: The position involves some exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous substances, and other conditions typical of a clinical setting.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS: The LPN must demonstrate knowledge of medical practices and patient care standards. The individual should be empathetic, tactful, and understanding in interactions with patients. Recognizing urgent issues during patient communications and ensuring timely service is essential. Familiarity with record-keeping requirements is necessary.

PROBLEM-SOLVING ABILITY: The role requires sound judgment when interacting with diverse patient and staff personalities. Duties are typically performed within established guidelines, with the ability to work independently or under direct supervision. Complex issues may be referred to higher management or medical professionals.

ACCOUNTABILITY: The LPN is responsible for all patient care delivered and must adhere strictly to physician directives. The role demands a friendly and cooperative demeanor with patients and the ability to assess the urgency of issues raised by patients, consulting physicians as necessary. Efficient use of supplies and resources is expected.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Completion of an accredited LPN program with active licensure is required.

EXPERIENCE: No prior experience is necessary.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE: A valid LPN license from the state of Ohio is required.

HIPAA COMPLIANCE: This position necessitates full access to patient health information.
