Job Summary

The Gas Directional Drill Operator is a key member of the MasTec Utility Services team, responsible for safely operating the directional drill or locating utilities for a gas drill crew to install and service mainline conduit via HDD. This position supports the Line team and works with personnel within the department.

Responsibilities
  • Operate the drill rig efficiently, ensuring maximum productivity and minimal downtime.
  • Prepare job and drill sites to ensure safe and successful operations.
  • Pothole all utilities that will be paralleled or crossed during the bore shot, verifying their locations and depths.
  • Verify existing utilities and develop a plan for navigating around them.
  • Fill water tanks with water and combine it with chemicals for boring, taking into account the ground conditions.
  • Locate the drill head from point A to point B without hitting any utilities at the correct depth, using specialized equipment and techniques.
  • Hook up swivel, reamer, and pipe product that will be pulled back to complete the bore shot, ensuring proper connections and safety protocols.
  • Before the bore shot is started, walk out the bore shot to ensure all utilities have been located and develop a plan for going above or below each utility or obstacle in the bore path.
  • Pull back the product with the correct hole opener and utilize the correct mud mixture to ensure that the product makes it from point B to point A.
  • Inspect and maintain equipment regularly, performing routine checks and repairs as needed.
  • Provide assistance and training to all drilling trainees, sharing knowledge and expertise to ensure a smooth transition.
  • Maintain and inspect rig regularly, ensuring it is in good working condition and meets safety standards.
  • Implement best practices for utility verification, staying up-to-date with industry standards and regulations.
  • Read blueprints and assist in preparing drill log records, documenting important information and progress.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • 1 year of related experience preferred.
  • Operator Qualification required before beginning work.
  • OSHA 10 Certification required.
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential required.
  • Ability to do some maintenance of drill equipment and mixing unit.
  • Ability to identify and distinguish colors of utility flags and markings on the ground.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

This job operates in a field environment, requiring extended periods of physical activity, including bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, and standing. The role also involves working in inclement weather conditions, such as extreme heat, cold, rain, ice, snow, and wind.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. This position is physically active, with lifting required. Must be able to bend and lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more or 20 inches or less, with the ability to judge distance and space relationships. Precise hand-eye coordination. Ability to identify and distinguish colors.
