Position Overview:


The Assistant/Associate Professor is integral to advancing research, medical education, program management, and clinical practice within the Department of Preventive Medicine and Population Health, as well as the School of Medicine.

This role emphasizes contributions to scholarly work, securing external funding, and engaging in multidisciplinary research initiatives. The position also includes mentoring students and residents while actively participating in the recruitment of program candidates.

Expertise in preventive medicine is essential for addressing health challenges in East Texas and beyond, collaborating with scientists and health researchers.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Program Director to develop clinical services tailored to our specialty, including preventive medicine, lifestyle medicine, and tobacco cessation counseling.
  • Deliver clinical care to patients in the designated clinics, ensuring oversight in conjunction with the program director.
  • Provide guidance and instruction to medical students and residents in departmental clinics.
  • Dedicate approximately 40% of time to clinical responsibilities.
  • Serve as the assistant program director for the public health and general preventive medicine residency program.
  • Conduct specialty-appropriate lectures, case discussions, and book studies for medical students, residents, faculty, and community members.
  • Establish an independent collaborative research agenda focused on prevention.
  • Engage in grant writing and implementation of funded projects.
  • Assist with the administration and execution of departmental cancer prevention grants.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness initiatives for the university and public health district.
  • Support public health and community health initiatives as assigned.
  • Contribute to committee functions and university governance as required.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in interacting with faculty, staff, and students at the UT Health Science Center at Tyler.

Qualifications:

  • Medical degree from an accredited institution.
  • Board eligibility or certification in public health and general preventive medicine through the American Board of Preventive Medicine (if board eligible, certification must be obtained within three years of graduation).
  • Preferred certification by the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine.
  • Preferred certification by the American Board of Obesity Medicine.
  • A strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research.
Licensure and Certification Requirements:

  • Licensure from the Texas Board of Medical Examiners.
  • DEA license.
  • Certification in smoking cessation within one year.
  • Board certification in Lifestyle Medicine through the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine within two years.
  • Board certification in Obesity Medicine by the American Board of Obesity Medicine within three years.
