We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Property & Evidence Custodian to join our team. As a Property & Evidence Custodian, you will be responsible for maintaining the integrity of evidence and property, ensuring compliance with federal, county, and state laws and regulations.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain and secure evidence, including weapons, narcotics, and other sensitive materials.
- Receive, catalog, and store property and evidence, verifying serial numbers, content, count, or weight, and entering data in logs, records, and computer databases.
- Label and store property in accordance with prescribed procedures and methods to ensure safe handling, security, packaging, and identification of items.
- Observe and inspect submitted property and evidence to ensure compliance with prescribed packaging and submission standards.
- Prepare and release evidence and property to authorized personnel for possession, laboratory analysis, examination, or court exhibit.
- Destruction and disposal of chemical waste, narcotics, and unclaimed/unsold firearms following prescribed procedures.
- Monitor case records to dispose of property no longer needed for evidence purposes and dispose of unclaimed property.
- Communicate with the general public, attorneys, and law enforcement personnel concerning inquiries relating to the release or storage of property and evidence.
- Follow the disposition of criminal cases to prepare impounded property for appropriate treatment.
- Duplicate audio and video evidence for review by prosecutors, defense attorneys, and courts.
- Deliver and retrieve records from all MCSO facilities on request; copy, distribute, and re-file.
- Accept excess inmate property, notify owners, track responses, and release or dispose of property accordingly.
- Instruct at the basics and advanced training for detention and sworn officers.
- Conduct evidence packaging classes at the districts as needed.
- Retrieve sensitive, confidential material from all MCSO facilities and observe the shredding or proper disposal of this material.
- Maintain warehouse and computer equipment to ensure all function properly.
- Perform criminal history computer background checks to determine appropriate release of firearms.
- Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively/jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
- High school diploma or GED.
- One (1) year of experience in warehousing, inventory control, or recordkeeping.
- OR combined education and experience qualifications: Post-secondary education may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
- Experience in law enforcement and/or high security environment in a property/evidence room.
