Exercise Physiologist

The Exercise Physiologist provides clinical expertise and coordinates daily clinical activities in the cardiopulmonary rehabilitation programs at UNC Health Appalachian. This role requires effective communication with patients, families, visitors, colleagues, physicians, leadership, and volunteers to achieve top-decile results and outcomes for patient experience, quality, and patient safety.
Responsibilities- Provides cardiac and pulmonary testing, including metabolic exercise/pulmonary stress, Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT), and other diagnostic procedures.
- Develops and implements individualized exercise programs for patients with cardiopulmonary conditions.
- Collaborates with healthcare teams to ensure seamless care delivery and achieve optimal patient outcomes.
- Communicates effectively with patients, families, and healthcare providers to ensure understanding and adherence to treatment plans.
- Maintains accurate and detailed records of patient progress and treatment plans.
- Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Physiology or related field required.
- Masters prepared Exercise Physiologist with teaching experience preferred.
- Two years of work experience in Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation or equivalent clinical internship.
- Certifications related to exercise physiology and diagnostic cardiac/pulmonary function required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications from the American Heart Association.
The Exercise Physiologist works in a fast-paced clinical environment with frequent exposure to blood-borne diseases, electrical/mechanical/power equipment, and unpleasant elements. Regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases. Frequently exposed to hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment; odorous chemicals and specimens; and, unpleasant elements (accident, injury, slippery surfaces uneven surfaces), etc.
Subject to irregular hours (days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays); and emergency situations. Continuous standing and walking long periods > 8 hours per shift. Speaking, reading and writing, expanded > 8 hours per day. Exposed to vibration; and cramped spaces > 1 hour day. Frequently mobilizes patients > 4 hours per day.
Frequently per shift: lifts, carries; pushes; and/or, pulls > 50 lbs. Frequently per hour: bends; squats; kneels; twists; turns; and reaches. Frequently per minute: hand, finger and wrist repetition; and moderate dexterity. Frequently per hour, exposed to soft voices > 3ft away. Frequently per hour, exposed to close eye work. Infrequently per shift, may be exposed to Ionizing/nonionizing radiation exposure including x-ray and microwave.
