Adjunct Faculty - Surgical Procedures II (Lab)

This course delves deeper into the responsibilities and functions of the scrub role within surgical technology. Surgical domains covered in this course encompass genitourinary, ophthalmologic, otorhinolaryngologic, maxillofacial, and plastic and reconstructive surgery. This course serves as a preparatory step for Surgical Procedures III and Surgical Practicum I and II.

Reporting Structure:

Adjunct Faculty will report to an Academic Dean.

Key Responsibilities:

Adjunct faculty members are primarily tasked with engaging with students and collaborating with Deans or other University personnel concerning educational matters. Faculty are expected to:
  • Provide consistent verbal and written feedback to students regarding their performance throughout the course, adhering to Faculty Expectations.
  • Be accessible to students through various communication channels for questions and academic support as outlined in the Faculty Expectations.
  • Respond promptly to Dean/University staff regarding performance, student concerns, or documentation needed for faculty records/accreditation.
  • Exhibit appropriate conduct, language, professional communication, demeanor, and attire at all times.
Essential Functions:

The primary duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following tasks and responsibilities. The employee is expected to perform additional duties as assigned. Adjunct faculty will be assigned up to 3 work units per academic quarter.

Teaching Effectiveness: Professionalism, Technology Utilization, and Content Mastery
  • Engaging Classroom Environment
    • Employ effective teaching methodologies and diverse instructional techniques; model appropriate learning skills and foster a conducive learning atmosphere.
    • Encourage high levels of student participation through activities, community engagement, and student-centered learning, including the use of live classroom tools for synchronous sessions.
    • Ensure clarity, relevance, and alignment of class objectives with course performance goals.
    • Maintain an organized classroom and optimize class time usage.
  • Subject Matter Proficiency
    • Exhibit mastery and the ability to convey knowledge effectively to students.
    • Contribute significantly to the development and execution of curriculum and assessment in their area of expertise.
  • Student and Institutional Support and Professionalism:
    • Faculty are responsible for establishing a supportive classroom presence in collaboration with their Dean.
    • Provide student support and outreach to facilitate student success through availability for synchronous or asynchronous communication and meetings to help students meet learning objectives.
  • Faculty Meetings and Additional Duties:
    • Attend events, program meetings, and committee work as designated by the Dean.
  • Professional Development:
    • Faculty must complete a minimum of six (6) Rasmussen Educational Units (REUs) annually or two (2) REUs per quarter for each quarter taught, as specified in the faculty handbook.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Preferred teaching experience (Minimum of 3 years in the relevant field).
  • Clinical preceptor experience is preferred.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and capable of working collaboratively with minimal supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective interaction with students, leadership, and colleagues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
Education, Certifications, and Licenses:
  • Associate's degree in Surgical Technology or Surgical Nursing.
  • Active, unrestricted CST or CST/CSFA certification. If a state license is required, it must be unencumbered.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in the operating room scrub role, as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both within the last 5 years.
  • Must comply with Rasmussen University's policies regarding faculty immunizations and provide necessary documentation.
  • Must provide official transcripts for all degrees earned from accredited institutions prior to teaching.
