Aircraft Engine Mechanic Job Description

Summary

This position is for an Aircraft Engine Mechanic in the Nebraska Air National Guard. The successful candidate will be responsible for troubleshooting and repairing aircraft engines and related systems.

Responsibilities
  • Troubleshoot and repair malfunctioning engines and interrelated propulsion system components
  • Analyze malfunctions using schematic and wiring diagrams, blueprints, manufacturer's specifications, computer diagnostics data, inspection findings, trending data, and aircrew debriefs
  • Perform engine run operations on installed and uninstalled engines to troubleshoot malfunctions or verify findings
  • Remove and install engines and auxiliary power units
  • Operate Automated Ground Test Systems (AGETS) and troubleshoot and repair aircraft jet engines
  • Troubleshoot, modify, repair, and perform sequential disassembly and assembly of gearboxes and auxiliary power units
  • Perform evaluations at critical points in the repair/build-up process using quality characteristics
  • Perform test cell operations of engine and aircraft run-up, analyze operating parameters, make final adjustments, and verify that the engine is operating within acceptable parameters for safe operation in the aircraft
  • Perform scheduled and special evaluations on installed engines, auxiliary power units, and associated airframe-mounted systems
  • Interpret Engine Management trend data and investigate trend anomalies to eliminate catastrophic engine failure or damage
  • Perform command-directed and locally established in-progress inspections (IPI) to determine adequacy of workmanship, materials, and maintenance
  • Make final certification of completed work and critical engine build measurements
  • Certify that the aircraft is safe for flight by clearing Red X and other Red symbols
  • Requisition, process, and account for supply assets as required by the repairable processing system
  • Verify compatibility of engine components
  • Perform computer data entry of engine and component information into the Core Automated Maintenance System (CAMS)
  • Use computer-based systems to account for time expenditures of maintenance performed
  • Provide technical advice and troubleshooting expertise to other work centers
  • Provide on-the-job training to lower-graded personnel or newly assigned personnel
  • Examine recurring malfunctions and initiate corrective actions
  • Devise repair procedures based on findings and recommend program changes or data corrections
  • Serve as the hazardous materials manager and interpret and follow state and federal regulations regarding the reclamation, storage, and transportation of hazardous materials
  • Prepare for and participate in various types of readiness evaluations
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
Requirements
  • National Guard membership is required
  • Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform
  • Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard
  • Compatible military grade and assignment required prior to the effective date of placement
  • Selectee has 24 months to become qualified in a compatible military assignment
  • Security clearance/background check requirements must be met
Qualifications
  • Experience or training that has provided the ability to perform assembly and disassembly operations and make prescribed modifications to aircraft engines, engine assemblies, and accessories
  • Experience using hand and power tools common to the trade
  • Specialized experience in the use of common hand tools to make mechanical repairs and in following detailed instructions in making routine, reoccurring repairs and modifications to aircraft parts, sub-assemblies, and components
