Position Objective

The Senior Project Engineer plays a crucial role in supporting the organization in achieving its goals by engaging in the oversight of daily operations for significant capital and expense initiatives. Under the guidance of the Engineering Manager, the individual is tasked with ensuring that all strategies, capital planning, engineering, procurement, and construction activities are executed in the safest and most cost-efficient manner, while adhering to all governmental and corporate standards, policies, and regulations.

Purpose of Role

This role involves managing and directing all aspects of the successful and safe execution of capital, expense, and continuous improvement projects. Responsibilities include aiding in the definition of project scope and developing execution plans based on the FEL stage gate process principles to guarantee that all strategies, capital planning, engineering, procurement, and construction are conducted in compliance with safety and cost-effectiveness standards.

Essential Functions
  • Ensure compliance with all EHS regulations and procedures in project management, including oversight of contractors, vendors, and consultants.
  • Develop comprehensive project plans, metrics, work schedules, resource allocations, and status reports. Identify project risks and formulate mitigation strategies, with a strong emphasis on HSE planning and compliance.
  • Conduct analysis of process and design engineering, including optimization, preparation of PFDs and P&IDs, technology packages, basis of design documents, and equipment specifications.
  • Provide leadership and direction to project teams, ensuring that project milestones and deliverables are achieved.
  • Communicate project status to executives and key stakeholders through various reporting methods, including status reports and executive briefings.
  • Perform Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) on selected business processes to support the business case, including recommendations for process improvements related to quality, delivery, and cost.
  • Negotiate contracts for supplies and services with third-party vendors.
  • Offer technical support to resolve issues within an integrated cross-functional team environment.
  • Supervise third-party engineering and construction contractors.
  • Provide analytical solutions to operational and maintenance challenges.
  • Prepare specifications for the procurement of materials and equipment.
  • Design conceptual and detailed plans for process/control modifications and new technologies.
  • Manage capital and major maintenance projects, focusing on schedule and cost control, as well as installation and commissioning.
  • Draft contract documents and oversee contract administration.
  • Conduct equipment inspections and surveys as required.

Work Environment

This position involves exposure to various hazards, including fumes, moving mechanical equipment, energized electrical systems, and varying weather conditions while navigating a large manufacturing site.

Physical Demands

The physical requirements of this role necessitate effective communication with various stakeholders. The position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting or moving items over 50 pounds.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time salaried exempt role, with variable hours that may require additional time as needed.

Travel

Occasional travel to vendor locations may be necessary, depending on project requirements.

Education and Experience

A Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering is required, along with a minimum of five years of full-time experience in an industrial mill environment as an Electrical, Mechanical, or Project Engineer. Experience in construction management and maintenance within an industrial or process plant setting is also preferred.
