Job Overview

The Youth Services Librarian plays a pivotal role in fostering a dynamic library environment for adolescents. This position demands innovation, passion, and a comprehensive understanding of youth culture to deliver both educational and leisure support. As a vital member of the Youth Services Team, the Youth Services Librarian is expected to undertake the following key responsibilities:

  • Collection Management: Curate and oversee resources for the youth collection, ensuring alignment with their interests and needs.
  • Program Development: Create and execute engaging educational and recreational activities, including reading initiatives and gaming events, while evaluating their success.
  • Community Engagement: Advocate for library services and programs among youth through collaboration with local educational institutions and community organizations.
  • Technical Support: Assist young patrons with technology usage, digital inquiries, and tech-related challenges.
  • Collaborative Efforts: Work alongside the Youth Services Team and other library personnel to enhance library offerings and participate in collaborative meetings and training sessions.
  • Volunteer Coordination: Guide members of the Teen Advisory Board in planning and executing captivating activities and programs for the youth.

The Youth Services Librarian is an entry-level role within the Librarian job category, working closely with the Youth Services Team. This position involves participation in staff meetings, training opportunities, and professional growth initiatives. The role also includes supporting the Management Team and other library staff in developing policies, procedures, and sustainable strategies for various library programs and services, contributing to the overall objectives of the library.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and implement diverse programs and initiatives for the library.
  • Analyze basic statistical data and compile reports for library management and relevant stakeholders.
  • Manage bibliographic and item records within the library catalog.
  • Provide reference and technology assistance to library patrons.
  • Participate in committees and may occasionally lead committee efforts.
  • Handle operational duties such as cash management and daily financial reporting.
  • Oversee the collection management process.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable resource for readers' advisory.
  • May supervise junior Library Associates, including performance management and training.
  • Understand and uphold the principles of the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights and related statements.
  • Adhere to all legal and policy requirements regarding patron privacy and records management.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • MLS or MLIS degree is required.
  • Preferred experience includes one year in a librarian role.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with online library databases and services.
  • Exceptional customer service and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including weekdays, evenings, and weekends.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to navigate the library space and lift items weighing up to 25 pounds, with occasional lifting of up to 35 pounds.
  • Capability to maintain focus on tasks for extended periods, including working with computer screens and detailed documents.
