Position Overview:

The Youth Services Librarian plays a pivotal role in fostering engagement among adolescents within a dynamic library environment. This position demands creativity, passion, and a comprehensive understanding of youth culture to deliver both educational and leisure support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collection Management: Curate and oversee the selection of materials tailored to the interests of young adults.
  • Program Development: Create and execute educational and recreational initiatives, such as reading challenges and gaming events, while evaluating their success.
  • Community Outreach: Advocate for library services and programs to teenagers through collaboration with local educational institutions and community organizations.
  • Technical Support: Assist young patrons with technology usage, digital research, and related inquiries.
  • Collaborative Efforts: Work alongside the Youth Services Team and other library personnel to enhance library offerings and participate in training and meetings.
  • Volunteer Coordination: Guide members of the Teen Advisory Board in planning and executing engaging activities for their peers.

This entry-level position within the Librarian job family emphasizes teamwork and collaboration with the Youth Services Team. Participation in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development is essential.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and implement various library programs and initiatives.
  • Analyze basic statistical data and compile reports for library management and other stakeholders.
  • Manage bibliographic and item records for the library catalog.
  • Provide reference assistance and technical support to library patrons.
  • Serve on committees and occasionally assume leadership roles.
  • Handle opening and closing tasks, including cash management and daily reporting.
  • Oversee the collection management process.
  • Act as a proficient readers' advisor.
  • Supervise junior Library Associates, including performance management and training.

Essential Qualifications:

Candidates should possess the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities, along with the necessary education and experience:

  • MLS or MLIS degree is mandatory.
  • Preferred: One year of experience in a library setting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with online library databases and services.
  • Exceptional customer service and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Able to accommodate a flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends.

Physical Requirements:

Must be capable of moving throughout the library, lifting, pushing, or carrying items weighing up to 25 pounds, and occasionally up to 35 pounds, such as books and files. The ability to focus on tasks for extended periods is also necessary.
