Your Role as a CDL-A Trainee:
In this position, you will learn the fundamental responsibilities of a Driver, which include the accurate and timely delivery of products to various customer locations. As a Driver Trainee, you will gain insight into warehouse operations and other functions as part of your development into a full-fledged MIW Driver. You will work closely with a Driver Trainer to acquire the necessary skills to perform the following tasks:
  • Position the tractor to attach the trailer and secure it properly.
  • Operate the truck safely, adhering to all local, state, and federal regulations and company policies.
  • Inspect tractor-trailer equipment for defects before and after trips and submit a DOT inspection report detailing the condition.
  • Utilize Driver Delivery Handheld (DDH) to document delivery receipts, product temperatures, and exceptions. Ensure the trailer is secure for the undamaged transport of goods.
  • Accompany and train with a Driver Trainer on various routes, gaining knowledge of commercial driving regulations and observing the Driver's skills in operating the vehicle.
  • Maintain a driver log (Manual or PeopleNet) in compliance with DOT regulations, documenting delivery receipts, product temperatures, and exceptions.
Qualifications for a CDL-A Trainee:
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Meet eligibility criteria in the McLane Transfer and Promotion Policy.
  • Complete training and obtain Class A CDL within 6 months.
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, climb, reach, bend, squat, and stoop to perform essential job functions.
  • Read and understand labels, instructions, and bills of lading.
  • Perform mathematical calculations to verify product quantities.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, management, and team members.
  • Safely operate a tractor-trailer and utilize onboard PeopleNet devices.
