Position Overview

The role of a Federal Pretrial Services Specialist is essential in the judicial system, focusing on the assessment and management of individuals awaiting trial. This position demands a strong educational background and relevant experience to ensure effective supervision and support for defendants.

Qualifications

To be eligible for the Federal Pretrial Services Specialist position at CL-27 or CL-28, candidates must possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a relevant field that demonstrates the ability to comprehend and apply legal standards and interpersonal skills necessary for the role.

For CL-27: A minimum of two years of specialized experience is required, or completion of a master's degree in a closely related discipline, or a Juris Doctor (JD) degree. For CL-28: Two years of specialized experience is mandatory.

Physical and Medical Requirements

The responsibilities of a Federal Pretrial Services Specialist involve the investigation and oversight of criminal defendants who may pose a risk to public safety. This role requires physical stamina, including extended periods of walking and standing, as well as the ability to employ self-defense techniques. Candidates must be physically fit, as the position entails managing potential threats during direct interactions with individuals accused or convicted of federal crimes.

All selected candidates will undergo a medical examination and drug screening prior to appointment. Successful completion of these evaluations is necessary for provisional appointment, pending a thorough background investigation.

Background Investigation

Following the medical assessment, candidates must complete a comprehensive security investigation conducted by the Office of Personnel Management. This process includes a credit check and an extensive background review. Candidates offered employment will also be subject to random drug screenings and periodic background checks throughout their tenure.

General Experience

Experience in law enforcement or security roles, excluding criminal investigations, is not considered specialized experience.
