Job Summary

The Part-time Specialist IV, Reference Assistant is a key member of the library team, responsible for providing exceptional reference services to library users. This role requires a high level of expertise in navigating print and non-print materials, as well as providing guidance on online systems and resources.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide reference assistance to library users, utilizing print and non-print materials to answer complex research questions.
  • Assist library users with online catalog, electronic databases, and other online systems, ensuring seamless access to information.
  • Offer directional guidance to library users, helping them locate materials and resources.
  • Respond to telephone, chat, and text reference questions, providing accurate and timely information.
  • Assist users with equipment usage and computer software, including Microsoft products and basic technology.
  • Participate in library programming, including computer workshops, story times, crafts, book clubs, and seminars.
  • Maintain photocopier and printers in the reference area, ensuring optimal functionality and contacting the Office of Technology Services as needed.
  • Assist users in checking out materials from the library, ensuring a smooth and efficient process.
  • Perform other reasonable, related duties as assigned.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED and at least 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft products and basic technology.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Good problem-solving skills and ability to multitask.
  • Ability to work without daily supervision.

Work Environment

The work is sedentary, with occasional walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items. The employee will work in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards. The equipment used includes a PC workstation, calculator, phone, and other general office equipment. The employee will interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position.
