Role Overview

This position is integral to the surgical services and operating room at Corewell Health. The Surgical Technician is accountable for the setup of the surgical environment, the handling of instruments during procedures, maintaining a sterile field, and adapting to dynamic conditions throughout surgical operations.

• Ensures the availability of sterile instruments and supplies during surgical interventions.
• Conducts counts of surgical sponges, needles, and instruments.
• Prepares surgical tables with essential equipment, sterile supplies, instruments, and medications for each procedure.
• Assists in the positioning of patients for surgeries, ensuring their safety throughout the operation.
• Establishes and upholds a sterile and secure environment.
• Actively participates in the management of preference cards through effective communication with surgeons and Equipment Management Individuals (EMIs).
• Proposes modifications to instrument sets to the EMI and collaborates with Sterile Processing Department (SPD) to identify sets needing attention.
• Engages with surgeons to recommend changes to instrument sets, such as streamlining or combining sets.
• Contributes to case cost management by discussing product usage with surgeons and providing suggestions for cost-saving measures.

Qualifications

• Associate's Degree or completion of an Accredited Surgical Tech Program or equivalent experience is required.
• Preferred: Experience as a Surgical Technologist (clinical rotations are considered as experience).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification is required within 90 days of employment.
• Surgical Tech Certification is preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and carry weights up to 50 lbs on occasion.
• Frequent standing and walking are required.
• Occasional bending, trunk rotation, and reaching are necessary.
• Visual acuity and manual dexterity are essential for performing tasks.

Work Environment

This position operates primarily within the surgical services department, requiring adherence to safety protocols and maintaining a sterile environment.
