Position Overview

The Surgical Services Technician plays a crucial role within the surgical department of Corewell Health. This position is responsible for the meticulous preparation of the surgical environment, the careful handling of instruments during procedures, the maintenance of a sterile field, and the assessment of dynamic conditions throughout surgical operations, responding appropriately as required.

• Ensures the availability of sterile instruments and supplies during surgical interventions.
• Conducts counts of surgical sponges, needles, and instruments.
• Prepares surgical tables with all necessary equipment, sterile supplies, instruments, and medications for each case.
• Assists in the positioning of patients for surgical procedures, ensuring their safety throughout.
• Establishes and upholds a sterile and secure environment.
• Actively participates in the development and management of preference cards through effective communication with surgeons and equipment management individuals.
• Proposes modifications to instrument sets and collaborates with sterile processing departments to address instrument set needs.
• Engages with surgeons to optimize instrument sets by suggesting removals, combinations, or additions as necessary.
• Contributes to case cost management by discussing product usage with surgeons and collaborating with equipment management individuals to identify cost-saving opportunities.

Qualifications

• Associate's Degree or completion of an Accredited Surgical Technology Program or equivalent experience is required.
• Preferred: Experience as a Surgical Technologist (clinical rotations are considered valid experience).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification is required within 90 days of employment.
• Surgical Technologist Certification is preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and carry weights exceeding 5 lbs, occasionally up to 50 lbs.
• Frequent standing and walking required.
• Occasional bending, reaching, and pushing/pulling forces may be necessary.
• Visual acuity and manual dexterity are essential for performing job functions.

Work Environment

This position is full-time, primarily during daytime hours, with a requirement for on-call weekend availability.
