Community Engagement Specialist for Families

The Community Engagement Specialist for Families plays a crucial role in the planning, development, coordination, execution, and evaluation of the Family and Community Engagement (FCE) initiatives within the Head Start Birth to Five program.
The FCE Specialist ensures adherence to all relevant federal, state, and local regulations, including the Head Start Program Performance Standards and the Head Start Act.
Key Responsibilities
1. Collaborates in the design and execution of training sessions and activities aimed at parents and families within the designated service area, including the Abriendo Puertas/ Opening Doors program.
2. Provides direction and assistance to family service and classroom personnel to guarantee the effective implementation of FCE-related activities, School Readiness Goals, and other applicable standards.
3. Develops and maintains a systematic approach for documenting and reporting parental involvement, focusing on assessing, planning, and measuring positive outcomes for parent-child interactions.
4. Works in partnership with family service and classroom staff to motivate families to engage actively in the Head Start Program and aids them in accessing community resources that promote family well-being and early childhood education.
5. Collaborates with program staff and community partners to connect parents with educational and career training opportunities that foster self-sufficiency.
6. Assists the FCE Manager in delivering training on Family and Community Engagement for Head Start personnel.
7. Gathers, analyzes, and enters monthly non-federal share (in-kind) reports into a shared database for the assigned cluster and classrooms.
8. Evaluates systems and processes to recommend best practices that align with the FCE content area, including reporting, documentation, and other child outcome data.
9. Utilizes and updates current literature, fatherhood resources, guides, and other materials, distributing them to staff regularly.
10. Aids in the recruitment and training of caregiver/parent volunteers.
11. Organizes and facilitates bi-monthly Parent Committee Meetings for assigned centers, oversees elections for Policy Council representation, and maintains an active group of Head Start Parents to represent Policy Council meetings.
12. Monitors, supports, and assists family service/classroom staff with transition activities from Head Start to Kindergarten.
13. Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates communication strategies between the program and families to ensure effective engagement efforts.
14. Networks, assists, and maintains written agreements with community partners to promote the Head Start Program.
15. Supports teaching staff with child supervision in the classroom as necessary.
16. Performs any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required: Experience working with parents and/or children in a childcare, educational, or office environment that involves coordinating parental engagement.
Preferred: A minimum of 2 years of experience in Head Start.
• A bachelor's degree in social work, human services, family services, counseling, early childhood education, or a related field.
• A valid driver's license and a safe driving record are required.
• Must pass a background check and pre-employment physical, obtaining an annual health certificate.
• Additional annual certification and training in First Aid and Adult and Infant/Toddler CPR are required.
• Must complete 24 hours of professional development and staff training annually as outlined by the Head Start Program Performance Standards.
Preferred: A master's degree in Social Work, Counseling, Early Childhood Education, or a related field.
Required: Proficiency in computer skills, reporting, service documentation, and record-keeping.
Good verbal, problem-solving, and writing skills are essential.
Preferred: Bilingual ability (Spanish/English) is advantageous.

• Critical sensory requirements include general vision, with specific abilities such as close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

• Capable of walking, sitting, standing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving objects up to 10 lbs., and occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds.
Working ConditionsWork is conducted in a classroom/office environment with minimal exposure to injury. Standard working hours are generally during regular business hours, averaging at least 40 hours per week, with variations due to special projects and deadlines.
