Position Overview

The U.S. Department of the Interior is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Wildland Firefighter. This position is crucial for managing and executing prescribed fire and fuels management initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversees a comprehensive prescribed fire and fuels management strategy at the unit or tribal level, encompassing prescribed burns, mechanical and biological treatments, and monitoring of fire effects, fuels, and smoke.
  • Develops and implements the essential components of prescribed fire and fuels management plans.
  • Formulates and proposes plans and timelines for prescribed fire activities, wildfire response, and fuels treatment projects.
  • Evaluates project proposals and provides insights on necessary monitoring levels.
  • Employs databases to simulate and assess fire behavior and the impact of fire effects.
  • Engages in the planning and coordination of routine aspects of the fuels management program.
  • Reviews and offers feedback on relevant sections of the Fire Management Plan related to prescribed fire and fuels treatments.
  • Manages and executes the technical and administrative components of the prescribed fire and fuels plan, ensuring compliance with established standards during preparation, ignition, holding, mop-up, and rehabilitation phases.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factors

  • Must possess qualifications as a Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 2 (RXB2) or higher.
  • Secondary qualifications include Engine Boss (ENGB), Crew Boss (CRWB), or Helicopter Manager (HMGB) or higher.

Physical and Work Environment

The role involves both office and fieldwork, requiring physical stamina to navigate rough terrain and endure varying weather conditions. The incumbent must be in good physical condition to perform field activities safely, including working in areas with uncontrolled wildfires.

Protective clothing is mandatory, and adherence to safety protocols is essential for personal and team safety.
