Phlebotomy Specialist

The Phlebotomist I is a vital member of our medical team, responsible for accurately collecting patient specimens for diagnostic testing in a professional medical environment. This role involves working in a dynamic and engaging team, with a workload that ranges from fast-paced hospital settings to high/low volume clinics. As a Phlebotomist I, you will gain valuable experience and knowledge to help prepare you for workplace and career advancement.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collect patient specimens for diagnostic testing, adhering to established procedures and protocols.
- Identify patients using two patient identifiers and label specimens and specimen containers accurately.
- Determine the correct priority for STAT, Routine, ASAP, etc. specimen collections and ensure timely transport and processing of all patient specimens for testing.
- File patients' lab reports, requisition charges for the business office, and send reports to outside hospitals and clinics.
- Investigate complex bills, as needed, and research and resolve any questionable patient orders.
- Enter patient demographic data accurately and maintain required lab records and logs.
- Perform complex specimen set-up, enter complex orders and results, and pack and ship infectious materials.
- Communicate any special situations related to specimens or testing with all appropriate staff and management.
- Clean and maintain equipment, centrifuges, and refrigerators, and record daily temperatures of all refrigerators in the phlebotomy areas.
- Order supplies and maintain sufficient inventory to efficiently operate phlebotomy services.
- Assist in the training of new associates and students and act as a receptionist, greeting patients and answering phones within the laboratory.
- Perform patient registration and test ordering and specimen processing as appropriate.
- Document and communicate information thoroughly and accurately, utilizing equipment according to departmental guidelines.
- Maintain a neat and clean work area, dispose of waste appropriately, and clean bench areas and equipment.
- Promote mission, vision, and values of SCL Health, and abide by service behavior standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Certified Phlebotomist/Specimen Processor: High School Diploma or equivalent and certification from one of the following: RPT, AMT PBT, ASCP, AMT, NCCT, NAPT, NHA, NPA, ACA, ASPT, or NHCO.
- Non-Certified Phlebotomist/Specimen Processor: High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred Qualifications: Six (6) months of laboratory experience.
- Interact with patients, patients' family, patient care providers, and others requiring the ability to verbally communicate information and understand spoken information.
- Operate computers and complex and delicate lab equipment with precision and accuracy.
- See and read lab equipment, labels, monitors, and documents.
- Walk while transporting phlebotomy equipment cart.
- Remain standing for long periods of time to perform work.
- Adjust body, including bending, to perform phlebotomy work.
