Under general supervision, the Vehicle Maintenance Specialist is tasked with executing routine preventative upkeep and basic repairs on a range of motorized equipment. This position ensures that all automotive machinery is adequately serviced and in optimal condition by diagnosing issues, conducting scheduled maintenance, installing replacement components, and adhering to established operational procedures. Furthermore, the specialist aids senior maintenance technicians with more intricate repairs as necessary.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducts preventative maintenance, routine repairs, and servicing on various motorized equipment. Services vehicles with fuel, oil, coolant, and filter changes; performs preventive maintenance by checking items such as battery condition, tire air pressure, coolant and oil levels, and hydraulic and brake fluid levels; performs minor electrical wiring repairs, services windshield wipers, tires, tail lamps, headlamps, spotlights, and component changes.
- Executes safety inspections on diverse types of equipment, including light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles.
- Performs light body component work, washes and cleans vehicles.
- Makes service calls driving a variety of vehicles/equipment, responds to vehicle/equipment breakdowns, picks up supplier parts and delivers vehicles to various locations.
- Conducts routine shop, tool clean-up, and maintenance.
- Utilizes assigned software to prepare work orders, records time spent, and parts used for vehicle maintenance and repair.
- May assist senior maintenance technicians with heavy-duty repairs as requested.
- Operates computers, diagnostic scanners, battery chargers, and other small testing devices.
- Works with service specifications from service manuals and online resources.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Requires entry-level general knowledge of the principles, practices, materials, and methods of general automotive mechanics; lighting systems, and other components; gasoline and diesel engine maintenance and repair; vehicle and equipment diagnosis, troubleshooting, and repair; and the skill and ability to apply that knowledge to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan driver's license.
- Basic welding skills or completion of a beginning welding course.
- Ability to diagnose minor repairs, recognize repair needs, and report needs to senior Fleet Maintenance Technician.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics and service manuals, utilizing books, computer, and the internet.
- Ability to operate customized fleet maintenance computer software, or ability to learn this skill.
This role requires the frequent exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle, or feel, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, and repetitive motions; frequently requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, climbing or balancing, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting, occasionally requires sitting; work has standard vision requirements with close vision; vocal communication is required to recognize detailed talking and to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm's length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities; work has regular exposure to working near moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, frequent exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, vibrations, and occasional exposure to wet, humid conditions, working in high, precarious places, and outdoor weather conditions; work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jackhammer work, garbage recycle plant).
