Job Responsibilities

The Environmental Services Technician plays a crucial role in maintaining a safe and clean environment within specialized healthcare areas, such as surgical services and recovery units. This position is vital for ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness and infection control, thereby enhancing the overall patient experience.

Key Duties Include:

  • Performing thorough cleaning and disinfection of specialized units and equipment, including but not limited to Surgical Services and Endoscopy.
  • Applying knowledge of healthcare cleaning principles and safe chemical usage while handling equipment and labor-saving products.
  • Adhering to safety, risk management, and infection control protocols to foster a culture of safety.
  • Maintaining accurate logs and checklists to ensure compliance with cleaning standards.
  • Executing cleaning and disinfection tasks according to established procedures and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Understanding and implementing evidence-based cleaning recommendations from recognized health organizations.
  • Managing supplies and equipment by keeping the environmental services cart organized and well-stocked.
  • Properly disposing of waste and identifying appropriate waste streams, including regulated medical and hazardous waste.
  • Following environmental and infection prevention practices, including hand hygiene and the correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Respecting patient privacy in accordance with HIPAA regulations.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Exhibiting personal accountability in all tasks.
  • Utilizing resources effectively to address and resolve issues.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of facility safety requirements.
  • Operating and maintaining all necessary EVS tools and equipment.
  • Assisting in the training of new Environmental Services Technicians as needed.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.

Experience Required

  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in healthcare environmental services.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to distinguish between levels of disinfection and perform necessary cleaning tasks.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written, to explain cleaning procedures.
  • Ability to read and write in English at a 6th-9th grade level is preferred.
  • Respectful listening and open communication with colleagues.

Requirements Upon Hiring

  • Physical examination.
  • PPD (TB test).
  • Blood tests for specific antibodies.
  • COVID vaccination is mandatory.
  • Flu vaccination is required.
