About the Position

This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to join the team at the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration as a Maintenance Mechanic. As a key member of our facilities maintenance team, you will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to carpentry and masonry, including construction, repair, and maintenance of buildings and structures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carpentry: Select, install, and repair doors and door accessories, windows, and structural members, such as wood or metal studding, floor and ceiling joists, roof rafters, flooring, and roof sheathing.
  • Carpentry: Install suspended ceilings, insulation, paneling, resilient floor covering, rubber base, shelving, shingles, wall and floor cabinets, carpeting, plastic laminate on wall, hang and finish drywall.
  • Carpentry: Construct/install counter tops, cabinets, and items of a special nature which cannot be purchased due to uncommon measurements/needs, etc.
  • Masonry: Perform maintenance, repair, and/or construction of a variety of structures and surfaces of brick, block, tile, stone, and other related materials.
  • Masonry: Repair/restores furniture by reproducing parts; reproduces building parts made of wood, such as cornice, antique moldings, windows, etc.
  • Masonry: May occasionally drive a truck up to 1 1/2 tons to deliver materials and install outdoor Christmas decorations.
  • Masonry: Assist roofers in the application of roofing.
  • General Maintenance: Lay floor tile, such as vinyl composition tile, carpet tile, lock maintenance, masonry, ceramic tiles, grouting, and bricklaying.
  • General Maintenance: Lay out and install ceiling grid and ceiling tile, framing drywall partitions, finishing drywall, plastering, and general carpentry work.
  • General Maintenance: Install door closures and door stops, hanging bulletin boards, pictures, mirrors, fans, clocks, etc., installing safety treads on steps, cuts and installs various types of glass.
Requirements
  • Experience: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position.
  • Qualifications: To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
  • Screen-Out Element: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen-out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire.
  • Drive Safely: Must be able to drive a truck up to 1 1/2 tons.
  • Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair: Must be able to assemble, install, and repair equipment.
  • Interpret Instructions, Specifications (includes blueprint reading): Must be able to interpret instructions, specifications, and blueprints.
  • Materials: Must be able to work with a variety of materials, including wood, metal, and masonry.
  • Technical Practices: Must be able to apply technical practices and procedures.
  • Troubleshooting: Must be able to troubleshoot and repair equipment.
  • Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment: Must be able to use and maintain tools and equipment.
