Position Overview:

The Agriculture Inspector role is situated within the Livestock and Poultry Program of the Animal Industry Division. This position involves monitoring, inspecting, investigating, and collecting samples to support the GDA Livestock and Poultry Program.

Key Responsibilities:

Under direct supervision, the inspector will:

  • Learn to evaluate agricultural products, processing equipment, and facilities to ensure adherence to health, quality, and safety regulations.
  • Assist in collecting samples of petroleum products, pests, or suspected diseased animals for laboratory analysis.
  • Support inspections of horticultural products and livestock to identify harmful diseases or infestations.
  • Examine livestock to assess the effectiveness of health and feeding programs.
  • Measure and weigh commodities such as poultry, eggs, meat, and seafood to certify their quality and compliance.
  • Inspect facilities and equipment for sanitation and regulatory compliance.
  • Document findings and provide recommendations to vendors, farmers, and processors regarding necessary corrective actions.

Job Summary:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting inspections at various locations including livestock markets and farms.
  • Identifying livestock to ensure compliance with health regulations.
  • Responding to animal health complaints and ensuring regulatory adherence.
  • Monitoring animal exhibitions for disease detection.
  • Collecting samples from various livestock for laboratory testing.
  • Issuing quarantines and permits, while preparing detailed reports.
  • Maintaining accurate records of work activities and inspections.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements:

Job duties may require:

  • Exposure to outdoor conditions for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry weights up to 50 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Agriculture Inspector 1: $37,000

Requires a vocational or technical degree in agriculture or a related field, or a high school diploma with one year of relevant experience.

Agriculture Inspector 2: $40,000

Similar educational requirements as Inspector 1, with additional experience preferred.

Preferred Qualifications: Candidates with a bachelor's degree in agriculture or related fields, or relevant management experience in agricultural businesses will be prioritized.
